Set in the heart of Thetford Forest - the largest lowland forest in the UK - the course is one of golf's best-kept secrets.
The legacy left by James Braid, Philip Mackenzie Ross and Charles Mayo, in shaping a design across the Breckland heathland over 100 years ago, is surely one they would be proud of today. The modern course winds its way through pine, oak and birch, and between heather, gorse and broom.
Using the natural land, and respecting its SSSI status, it's a course in harmony with its forest and heathland surroundings. It visually challenges and stimulates, while delivering a fair golfing test for all.
The par 72 course, at 6,849 yards, is made very playable thanks to crisp, firm and dry playing conditions. It means the course is open and playable almost every day of the year and is particularly popular in autumn and winter.
The opening five hole loop starts with a challenging 180 yard, two-tier, par 3, swiftly followed by four strategically and visually strong holes, the pick of which is the 5th. It's played from an elevated tee to a well-bunkered fairway, with a second shot where one has to be below the hole.
Holes 7 to 11 are newer, designed by Donald Steel and opened in 1987. With 35 years of tree growth they have matured into the the rest of the forest course. These holes are stronger and longer and hold the key to a good score.
From the 12th you are back on the original layout where the holes bear comparison with Surrey heathland courses. The last five holes are truly special, with the picks being the 14th, 15th, and the signature 16th with its island green set in a sea of heather. The 18th is a fitting home hole on any course; at 475 yards it requires position and power.
Thetford is a truly good course, and those that find it can be assured of an outstanding golf experience.
