For those visiting the blessed East Lothian coast it can be difficult to know where to start. Base yourself in Gullane and within a five-minute drive you can choose from Gullane 1, 2 and 3, Luffness, North Berwick, The Glen, Longniddry, Muirfield, Archerfield (Fidra and Dirleton), the Renaissance (if invited), Craigielaw, Whitekirk and Haddington. And we have not yet mentioned one! Kilspindie, tucked away between Aberlady and Gullane is all too easy to miss yet contains within 5,500 yards every element of links golf you could wish for.
Set on the coast with views across to Fife and of the Edinburgh skyline, Kilspindie is the kind of course that comes to mind on dark winter days, reminding you of a distant and special experience. It is at its very best on a summer’s evening with friends. Kilspindie will not beat you up – though it will surprise those who take good scores for granted.
From the par-3 opener that takes you away from the handsome old clubhouse, right the way to the last, which is classed as a very short par 4, Kilspindie charms and surprises at every turn.
There are plenty of birdie chances, it is true, but also several holes where par is a good score. Well bunkered, if you treat it with respect you should be able to negotiate most holes without serious difficulty. The longest par 4 is the 15th, 437 yards and often into the wind. It is reasonably generous so set your stall out for a five and you should be able to prevent a total disaster.
Finish in style by having a cut at the green (in the right conditions) on the 253-yard 18th. Out of bounds lurks on the right so you might want to aim slightly left and hope for a pitch and a putt. If you are visiting Aberlady, near Gullane, stay locally at Ducks. It specialises in looking after golfers and is known for its food.
