Luffness Golf Club

Luffness Golf Club | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Courses

Luffness Golf Club is located in golfing paradise on the east coast of Scotland, in the same region at Gullane, North Berwick, Musselburgh, Archerfield, Longniddry and Muirfield, whilst only being 45 minutes from the centre of Edinburgh.

The club was founded in 1894, and the 18-hole lay-out was designed by the great Old Tom Morris. It is a traditional links golf course which offers a true test of golf despite not being the longest of lay-outs.

A Brief History of Luffness Golf Club

The original Luffness Golf Club was founded in 1867, slightly to the north and west of the current course. However, a dispute arose in 1893 about playing golf at that location.

A year later, Luffness New Golf Club was founded, with Old Tom Morris being the man behind the design, which has basically stood the test of time.

The club celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2019 with Dr Hector Chawla, a member of the golf club, being commissioned to write an updated history about the club.

Luffness Golf Club Review | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Courses

The course at Luffness measures 6581 yds, as a Par 70. That is a reasonable figure on a calm day, but very tight if even a slight wind blowing. Bunkers are placed in the right positions to capture errant shots, with small but true greens in play around the property.

Don’t go left on any of the first four holes. They work their way around the practice ground at Luffness, but it should be a comfortable start, as long as the wind is not howling off the coast. The 4th is the longest hole on the property at 572 yards, and can often play into the prevailing wind, making it feel more like 600. A par is a very good score on 4.

After a short par-4, the 6th is the second par-3, and at just 152 yards, it could be seen as a birdie opportunity as you hit over the road. 7 could be a reachable par-4 for the longer hitters at 320 yards, before the front nine closes with two par-4s both measuring more than 400. The 9th is the hardest hole on the scorecard by stroke index.

A 210-yard par-3 begins the back side at Luffness, before a series of par-4s gets you into the crux of the closing stretch. 14 is the longest hole on the back side, measuring at more than 550 yards long, with the 15th now at 420, having been extended by more than 100 yards in recent times. 16 is the last par-3 on the property, before Luffness finishes with a pair of par-4s, the second of which takes you back to the clubhouse.
