That the golf course in the famously picturesque town of Windermere is a delightful aesthetic experience is hardly a surprise.

That it sits on characterful terrain that gives rise to memorable holes and an entertaining round is also fairly predictable.

So Windermere having a strong presence in our Fun Top 100 is perhaps to be expected.

It enjoys spectacular views over Windermere and the surrounding fells and it has been referred to as a 'miniature Gleneagles' for understandable reasons.

It is short course but so enjoyable, a course where you can play 18 holes in just over two blissful hours. It is quirky, interesting, fun and beautiful. The views almost beat those on any coastal course.

The stand-out holes are the 8th, with great views from its green, and then the 13th and 14th for their interest and just being cool little holes.

In 1891 George Lowe, pro and designer of Royal Lytham, was asked to examine this site for a nine-holer. So popular was it that within a year it became 18.

It has, appropriately, always had its quirks: in the 1920s the 1st had a par of 4.5 and the 8th a par 3.5!

Windermere is situated in the heart of the Lake District off the B5284, south-east of Bowness-on-Windermere and offers incredible value given the memorable experience.
