Seascale is a golfer's golf club. From the unspectacular yet welcoming clubhouse to the tough yet vintage links, the discerning golfer will absolutely love this west Cumbrian club. Of course, the club is helped in offering such a memorable course by its position overlooking the Irish Sea – with the Isle of Man and Scotland frequently visible. A majestic maritime panorama to the west is complemented by the Lake District mountains to the east. A good start to a course by anyone's standards.
Seascale, designed by Willie Campbell and George Lowe, is a traditional links maintained to the highest standards. Located five miles south of Whitehaven, it fits neatly into a small area overlooked by Sellafield Power Station.
It also offers excellent views of the Isle of Man and the Lakeland Hills. Founded in 1893, the course is laid out over less than 100 acres but doesn't give the impression that one hole is encroaching on another.
It isn't a particularly long course at just 6,540 yards but encompasses a varied terrain, rising on the 1st hole and continuing down the inland side of the course. Characterised by fast greens, Seascale can create a very tough test of links golf, particularly in windy conditions.
It is extremely important to make the most of the downwind holes here as the ones played into the wind can be extremely challenging. The quality on offer here was again proven in 2012, when Seascale co-hosted The English Amateur Championships, earning praise from the EGU.
The first panoramic view here is found from the high tee at the 3rd, with the course continuing northwards until it turns in the opposite direction on the par-5 7th.
Although the back nine is the most memorable, the 9th is the only hole played directly towards the sea. Driving from a high tee, the line is straight at the Isle of Man.
A stream provides a hazard on both the 10th and the 13th with the real test coming on the final few holes; a wonderful end to the course.
The par-4 16th measures 473 yards with more defences than its length whilst the 17th tee overlooks the beach. Finally, the green on the 18th is L-shaped with several possible pin positions to create an added challenge when approaching.
Open all year round due to the quality of the soil, Seascale is one that presents a great day both on and off the course.
