Following the success of the Old course, San Roque decided a decade later to add a second 18 holes, and invited Perry Dye to design it.

It sits on much the same land and offers much the same tree-top views as its sister but this 7,000+ yard track is a notch up in difficulty.

It is not a huge exaggeration to say that those who suffer from claustrophobia should beware of the New, so tight are its fairways. More seriously, anyone who suffers with a wayward driver should move forward a set of tees, for this is no place to hit the longest club in the bag unless you are super straight.

Dye incorporated the big, steep bunkering for which his family are famous – even including railroad sleepers too at some points; both are on show in extremity on the 8th, a memorable short hole where the left side of the hole looks as if a giant ice cream scoop has been dragged along it, and in its place is an enormous bunker with tall sleepers in the face.

Finish with a good score here and you retire to the traditional looking clubhouse, in pale yellow and distinctive eating room red, to savour one of the Continent's most stringent examinations.
