It was labelled the ‘dawn of a new vision for golf’ – a course created entirely as a marketing tool and designed to be tour ready from the outset.
If you’ve been able to tee it up at JCB Golf and Country Club, lucky you. Unless you’re either a customer of the huge construction company, a supplier, an employee or an invited guest, these Staffordshire fairways will be off limits.
Exclusively, of course, is not guaranteed to coincide with excellence but nothing was left to chance here and the lush green rolling countryside, combined with the kind of boldness you’d expect from a European Golf Design project, has produced a layout that is already knocking on the door for a fully-fledged event.
The Rose Ladies Series tournaments have shown off its charms to a wider world already, and what we found were two nines that enthral across the ruins of an old hall and with brooks, canals, and large water areas featuring prominently.
Let’s start with the 17th - because it’s the hole for which you’ll already have had to retrieve your jaw from the floor.
At 255-yards, with its green resting on a converted island, it will probably require more than one ball for the average player – but there’s no doubt it’s an ambitious and exhilarating conclusion to the round.
And while you might naturally focus on length – it's some 7,308 yards from the tips – a round at JCB does not need to be a wounding experience. The yardages compress down to just 5,000.
Leaving aside the delights of that penultimate hole, there are highlights everywhere – starting with a tee shot over a lake on the opening hole.
Architect Robin Hiseman largely gives you width off the tee and then presents some significant challenges and principally with H2O.
The 9th is magnificent, demanding distance control as you estimate the drop down and desperately attempt to avoid the small pond that juts into a well bunkered fringe and putting surface. That it’s framed on all sides by mature woodland only adds to the joyful experience.
Then there’s the 12th with its stream carved into the side of the green. Anyone considering chancing their arm at this 324-yarder has a real decision to make, while the next, the final par 5, is simply divine with its massive lake framing almost the entirety of the hole.
Make no mistake this is thrill a minute golf and it carries on right to the bunker-laden finisher.
