How can low handicappers benefit?
Better players are looking to shave one or maybe two shots off per round. All pros play clubs that are custom fit. They know that clubs made to their specifications perform better, and take advantage of their swing, so low-handicap amateurs should do the same.
How can you help them improve?
By finding equipment that maximises the results produced by their swing, we can help increase the efficiency of their swing and customise their ball flight.
We use Flightscope technology to give players accurate measurements. It measures the trajectory of the ball, its spin, ball speed, carry, trajectory, spin rate, launch angle, club speed and club path, to give players maximum feedback and help them find the perfect combination.
What trends do you notice?
If there is one area in which the better player can gain a little more advantage in a fitting than the mid to high handicapper, it is in the selection of the right shaft flex and shaft bend profile (the design of the shaft’s stiffness over the entire length of the shaft). We spend a lot of time considering shaft options.
What are the most common misconceptions that the better players tend to have?
‘Industry standards’ are very confusing because, to be honest, there aren’t any.
A stiff shaft from one company will have a totally different weight, kick point, torque and length from that of another so you can’t buy clubs off the rack and expect them to meet the critical variables of your swing. Good players that do this tend to make compensations in their swing and this isn’t the way to improve.
Typically, what is the difference between what a customer comes in with and what he goes away with?
I would say that only 10 per cent of our customers have the right set, while another 40 per cent need only minor adjustments such as a change in loft. But half find that they would benefit from a total change in set, simply because their existing clubs have been built for the average player and not for them.
