REVIEW: Kaymer squeezes home

ClickMartin Kaymer moved up to sixth on the Ryder Cup standings after nervy last day in Munich.

No German had won the BMW International Open in the tournament's 20-year history and that run looked set to continue when the 23-year-old, who started the final round six shots clear, dropped two shots on the front nine and then ran up an eight at the par-five 11th.

He took on, and failed, a carry over water with a five iron and made matters worse by pitching a second ball in from the drop zone. That mistake brought in a whole host of players, including Denmark's Anders Hansen, who had five birdies in his last 11 holes to finish on 15 under.

Kaymer, who later dedicated the win to his seriously ill mother, recovered brilliantly from his treble bogey though, getting up and down at the 12th before pitching stone dead at the next, and then found the green at the last for a two-putt birdie and a place in the play-off.

And he finished the Dane off with another couple of outstanding shots, leaving himself with a seven-foot eagle putt, while Hansen found sand twice and eventually three-putter for a six.

Of a possible Ryder Cup debut Kaymer said: "I think I have a really good chance now and I'm looking forward to it. Six shots is a lot, but it does not feel like that.

"I struggled a little bit and made a big mistake on the 11th. I thought I would make it easy but got a little loft on the ball. I didn't keep my patience, but I will know for next time and I kept fighting."

The win gives him 150 Fantasy points while Hansen, John Bickerton and Paul Casey all picked up 100 for their efforts.

The two Englishmen finished two shots adrift, Bickerton closing with a 67 while Casey struggled with the putter all day before signing for a 70.
