Southport - England's golf capital
IF you are planning a golfing trip to the north-west of England then
there is undoubtedly no better place to base yourself than Southport.
Apart
from its ideal location within a 20-minute drive of no fewer than six
championship courses, this coastal resort combines a traditional
seaside heritage with high-quality hotels, fine dining and the
delightful Lord Street promenade.
It is also rooted in history.
The young, exiled Napoleon lived here and loved the wide boulevard so
much he ordered his architect to rebuild the centre of Paris in a
similar style. Hence Southport is often referred to as The Paris of the
North.
Red Rum, the only triple winner of the Grand National, was trained on Southport beach by ex taxi driver Donald 'Ginger' McCain.
The
resort's Pier is the oldest iron Pier in the country and the second
longest. Southport is home to the largest man-made leisure lake in the
UK (The Marine Lake) and the country's smallest pub (The Lakeside Inn).
