St Pierre Country Club is just a few miles inside the Welsh border with England, in the southeastern corner of the country. 

 

The Old Course is one of two 18-hole layouts at St Pierre, and was designed by CK Cotton in the 1960s, before a remodelling by Ross McMurray in 2008. 

 

1996 saw the Old Course at St Pierre become just the second European venue to play host to the Solheim Cup. The course has also hosted the DP World Tour on multiple occasions.

The Old Course at the St Pierre Country Club was the first of two courses to be built at the Welsh venue, with the course being opened in 1962. 

 

The original layout of the course was designed by CK Cotton, with Ross McMurray remodelling the Old Course in 2008. The Old Course was the second European venue to host the Solheim Cup. It played host to the biennial women’s match play competition in 1996.  

  

St Pierre has also played host to the Curtis Cup, along with seeing the DP World Tour visit on 14 occasions. The Epson Grand Prix of Europe was played in six successive years from 1986 to 1991, while the British Masters was played at St Pierre on eight occasions between 1971 and 1983, with the likes of Ian Woosnam, Greg Norman, Bernard Gallacher and Tony Jacklin all being victorious at the Welsh venue. 

The Old Course at St Pierre has been around for more than seven decades, and following McMurray’s remodelling of the layout in 2008, the Par 72 Old Course now plays at more than 7,000 yards from the tips, making it one of the longest courses that you will find on the NCG Top 100s: Wales list.  

 

The course opens with the longest hole at 580 yards from the tips, before you come face-to-face with a 400-year-old chestnut tree standing in the middle of the 2nd fairway. The 3rd is the opening par 3 on the Old, before a pair of tough par 4s. The 5th is the harder of the two, with a dog-leg right around the trees, meaning you must play the right distance from your tee shot to have an angle to the green.  

 

The 7th is the second par 5 on the card and turns right after the tee shot, again meaning you must find the fairway to have any chance of going for the green in two. 8 is a short par 4, while the 9th measures more than 460 yards from the tips, and one where a par is a great score. The back nine starts with the dog-leg left par 4 10th, which plays around a water hazard – and that won’t be the last water hazard you see on the Old Course. 

 

Following the par 4 11th, you come to the par 5 12th. After the drive, the hole turns left to open out towards the green, but bunkers either side of the green make anything slightly offline in trouble. 13 is a long par 3 of almost 220 yards from the tips, before the last par 5 on the course, the 14th, offers a great birdie opportunity.  

 

The 15th and 17th both come face-to-face with the same water hazard, with water looming around three sides of each green. Sandwiched in between is the long par 4 16th, measuring more than 460 yards from the tips. The Old Course closes with a long par 3, over 230 yards from the tips. It plays over water and with the buildings in close order behind the green. 

Where is St Pierre located?  
St Pierre Country Club is right next to the M48 and sits on the Welsh side of the England and Wales border. The Severn Estuary is just to the south of St Pierre, with Chepstow a couple of miles away. Newport, the closest Welsh city, is 15 miles to the west.   

 

Chepstow and Caldicot are both within five miles from St Pierre Country Club. The two stations are on the same train line between Cardiff and Gloucester, while there are also trains that run to Nottingham and Cheltenham. In terms of air travel, Bristol Airport is just 25 miles away over the Severn Estuary, and it is a hub for easyJet, Jet2.com, Ryanair and TUI Airways. Bristol is the busiest airport in the southwest of England, with almost eight million people passing through in 2022.   

Does St Pierre have more than one golf course?  
Yes – the Mathern Course makes the St Pierre Country Club into a 36-hole golf resort. Ross McMurray also remodelled the course in 2008, at the same time as he did the Old Course. Sitting on the east side of the resort, the Mathern is a much shorter track than the Old, coming in at less than 5,800 yards. As a Par 68, though, it can still cause one or two issues for players of all abilities. 

What golf facilities does St Pierre offer?  
Along with the Old and Mathern Courses, St Pierre also has extensive practice facilities for golfers to warm up on and hone their skills. There is a driving range which features both open-air grass tees and sheltered bays which are floodlit. The practice facilities also include putting greens along with a chipping green and practice bunker.   

What are the green fees at St Pierre?  
The price of a green fee on the Old Course at St Pierre changes throughout the year, depending on the season. It is also different depending on whether it is a weekday or weekend. There are also stay & play packages available at the resort.
