Designed in the 1990s by Dave Thomas, The Roxburghe is a rolling, tactically demanding layout with some spectacular views that represents modern course architecture at its very best. The Borders region is often bypassed by English visitors to Scotland but stopping off here on either the way there or back is an excellent idea. It is a particularly pretty part of the country and one that can be fully appreciated from the verdant Roxburghe fairways. From the tips, this championship course stretches to 7,100 yards but it is designed in such a way that it sets up equally well for the club player from tees that are significantly further forward.
So 470-yard par 4s to test any tournament pro become a more realistic 395 from the yellows for the rest of us for the other 51 weeks of the year. The holes may get shorter but that does not necessarily mean they become much easier. The bunkering, shaping of holes and contours of the greens sees to that.
Often, the fairways are generous enough to offer a straightforward safety-first route to the high handicapper, with the real trouble coming into play only if a more aggressive strategy is pursued. It was opened in stylish fashion by a game between Colin Montgomerie and Sir Nick Faldo.
10th 469 yards, par 4
Rated the hardest hole on the course, the tee-shot creates something of an illusion. You can see the green but if you hit directly towards it bunkers and heavy rough are brought into play. The alternative is a relatively easy tee-shot to the left and a steady mid-iron to within comfortable range of the green.
14th 571 yards, par 5
The viaduct hole is undoubtedly The Roxburghe’s signature. Every inch of the hole – and miles beyond – can be seen from the panoramic tee but the longer you stand on the tee the narrower the gap between the River Teviot to the left and the woolly bank to the right seems.
18th 437 yards, par 4
A suitably strong closing hole. On this right-to-left dogleg, you must play to the right of the farway bunkers to have any chance of finding the green in regulation.
