The Mere | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

The Mere is named after the pocket of water that the resort sits next to. The golf course, designed by James Braid, works its way along the side of The Mere and Little Mere, offering stunning views over the water. The resort also has an award-winning spa and health club, along with a newly renovated Fairmont hotel.

James Braid, five-time winner of the Open Championship, was the man behind the design of the championship golf course at The Mere. The layout, which sees the 1st, 2nd and 18th holes run parallel to the water’s edge, is a tricky Par 71 course measuring almost 7,000 yards. There is barley a straight hole on the course, with all the longer holes seeming to turn one way or the other. The resort is also the home to the only fully floating ball driving range in the United Kingdom, with golfers hitting balls out onto The Mere during their practice time.

The spa and health club at The Mere is an award-winning facility and has incredible amenities. There is a heated indoor swimming pool, along with a steam room, aromatherapy room and Hammam, while there are six treatment rooms for guests to indulge in either a massage of facial treatment during their stay.

The hotel closed over the 2023/2024 winter season to allow for renovations and refurbishment. When it reopened, it was the new Fairmont Cheshire at The Mere, with a glorious range of rooms and suites, some of which overlook The Mere and the championship golf course.

The Mere Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Golf by the Water

James Braid designed the championship golf course at The Mere, with the course first opening back in 1934. Almost a century on from then, and the course remains similar, with The Mere and Little Mere coming into play on the opening couple of holes and the final par 5 of the championship course.

The Par 71 layout is just shy of 6,900 yards from the back tees, and remains a challenge for all golfers. The layout starts and ends with par 5s, both of which feature the water hazard on their right. The opening hole on the course is a good birdie opportunity if you can keep the ball on the straight and narrow. A drive flailed out to the right on the 2nd is also in danger of finding The Mere, while the 3rd is a short par 3 that has a small water hazard in front of the green.

Both the 7th and 8th also have water features in front of their respective greens, with the latter being the second short hole on the layout. 13 is the longest par 4 on the course, pushing over 480 yards from the back tees, making it a par 5 for most players. A small stream runs across the 15th fairway, with the water then back in view on 18, as the final hole winds its way round The Mere. A double-dog-leg, with the fairway split into three pieces and the green facing back out to the water, it is a very tricky final hole.
