Hanbury Manor | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Hanbury Manor, or the Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club to give it its full title, is one of several Marriott-owned venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list. Along with the accommodation which is housed in the Jacobean-style country house, there is a championship golf course and a spa and wellness facility.

Starting with the Jacobean-style country house, which dates to the 17th Century. That is where all the accommodation offerings are housed at Hanbury Manor. There are Deluxe Rooms which can feature a king-sized bed or two doubles to sleep four people. There are also Manor House Rooms and Prestige Rooms, along with the range of suites. The Hanbury Suite is the best of the best at the venue, with golf course views, separate living area and both a bath and walk-in shower in the marble bathroom.

The golf course at Hanbury Manor has championship pedigree. The 18-hole layout, which has been designed by Harry Vardon and Jack Nicklaus II, is split in half by the manor house, with the front nine to the north and the back nine to the southeast. The DP World Tour, Ladies European Tour and Staysure Tour have all visited Hanbury Manor, with the likes of Lee Westwood, Andy Sullivan and Trish Johnson all being victorious at the resort.

Away from the golf course, there is plenty to do at Hanbury Manor. For those that want to work out, the spa and fitness facility on site has a well-equipped gym with free weights, cardiovascular machines and much more. There is also space for classes, including spin classes and yoga. The spa has a swimming pool, sauna, steam room and whirlpool, while there is a catalogue of massages and treatments that can also be enjoyed, given by a team of qualified professionals.

Hanbury Manor Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Championship Venue

The golf course at Hanbury Manor dates over a century, with six-time Open Champion Harry Vardon designing a nine-hole layout. The Vardon nine sits in the northern section of the resort, while the back nine is in the southeast portion. The back nine was added by Jack Nicklaus II, who also redesigned the front side of the course to make it into a championship lay-out.

Five years after its inauguration, the 18-hole layout at Hanbury Manor hosted the Marks & Spencer European Open on the Ladies European Tour. The DP World Tour has held the English Open and English Championship – the latter as part of its comeback swing in the UK after the COVID-19 lockdown – at Hanbury Manor. Trish Johnson, Lee Westwood, Darren Clarke, and Andy Sullivan are among those to have tasted victory at Hanbury.

The Par 72 layout measures more than 7,000 yards from the tips, but a choice of teeing options can bring that all the way down to just 5,400 yards. The course opens with a risk-reward 1st hole. If you feel confident then you can pull out the driver, but with three greenside bunkers and thick trees and bushes long and right, a long iron or hybrid followed by a wedge on might be the best way to get your round started.

The 2nd is the first of four great par 5s on the layout, with the approach being played over a water hazard to the green. The par 3 6th and par 4 8th both play around a water hazard as well, with the latter being the hardest hole on the course. 13, 14, 17 and 18 all feature water with the penultimate hole being the last par 5 at Hanbury. At only 504 yards from the tips, a good drive could see this being makeable in two, but with water in front of the green, the smart play is to lay up and have a wedge onto the green. The tee shot on 18 is over the same hazard, with four bunkers and a huge oak tree guarding the final putting surface.

Marriott Hotel

Like a few other venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, the hotel facilities at Hanbury Manor are owned and ran by Marriott. The Jacobean-style country house is the home to all the accommodation at Hanbury Manor, with each offering having views of either the gardens or golf course on site.

The Deluxe Rooms are available in two forms, coming with either a king-sized bed or two double beds, the latter of those being the biggest rooms in terms of occupancy, sleeping four people. There is also a variety of rooms available with adaptations for those that require it, from those with less mobility, to those that require roll-in showers.

The Manor House Guest Rooms and Prestige Rooms offer that bit more luxury before you get to the rage of suites on site at Hanbury Manor. There are both Junior Suites and Suites, with the Hanbury Suite being at the top of the tree. There is a separate living area to the bedroom in the Hanbury Suite, along with a separate bath and walk-in shower.

Spa & Fitness

The Hanbury Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club is also the home to a spa and fitness centre. The gym is well equipped, with a range of cardiovascular machines, free weights and more, along with space for group classes, such as yoga and cycling spin classes.

The spa section of the facility includes a swimming pool, whirlpool, steam room and sauna for those that are looking to relax. A team of qualified therapists are also on hand to provide a vast array of massages and treatments.
