Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

The Best Western Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa is a well-rounded venue, and has everything that those travelling to Devon for a golf holiday would look for. There are two golf courses, including the 18-hole Championship layout, along with a Best Western hotel and holiday cottages. The extensive health club and spa just add to the quality of the resort.
Jeremy Pern was the man to design Dartmouth’s Championship Course, which makes the most of the area's undulations and water hazards. All four of the layout’s par 3s feature water to some extent, with the downhill 18th being the signature hole on the course as it plays with the backdrop of the hotel. The Dartmouth Course is a 9-hole layout which offers a fun track for those getting into the game, or as a warm-up for those who are playing the Championship Course later in the day.
Golf is not the only way to stay active at the Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa. The health club features an outdoor tennis court and a swimming pool, along with a fully equipped gym for those that want to work out. The swimming pool can also form part of the spa facility, which includes a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Qualified professionals are on hand to offer an extensive range of massages and treatments.
The Best Western Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa might not have the largest array of accommodation, with just 35 rooms in the hotel. However, each room has comfort in mind. There is a variety of Twin, Family and Double Rooms available, along with the Valley Suite, while the range of Holiday Cottages provides another touch of luxury and privacy, with each offering sleeping up to six.

Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

27 Holes of Golf

The Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa is set in 225 acres of rolling South Hams countryside, and the resort features two golf courses – the 18-hole Championship Course and the 9-hole Dartmouth Course.
Championship Course
The Jeremy Pern-designed Championship course makes clever use of undulating terrain and several water features. The Par 72 layout ranges from 5,700 yards off the reds, to 7,100 off the tips, so there's something for all abilities, and offers a challenging but fun layout. Each of the par 3s on the Championship Course has a water hazard for you to watch out for.
The front nine features three of those par 3s, along with three par 4s and three par 5s, with the first par 3 coming at the 3rd. The hole requires you to carry the lake all the way to the green from the tee. The 5th features water to the left and behind the green, while the 240-yard 7th hole is played over water, but it should not affect how the hole is played too much. The front nine then ends with back-to-back par 5s, with the latter bringing you back to the facility, meaning the course can be played in two loops.
The back nine has six consecutive par 4s from the 10th to the 15th. Three of those (11, 14 and 15) measure more than 450 yards from the back tees, as the back nine tallies 400 yards more than the front side of the course. The 16th is the longest hole on the property, but the course saves its best till last. The par-3 finishing hole, played from a spectacular elevated tee overlooking the hotel, is a showstopper. It plays less than the carded 240 yards. Downhill, but over a large water hazard, it is a sublime way to finish your round on the Championship Course at the Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa.
Dartmouth Course
The 9-hole Dartmouth Course plays down the western side of the resort and can range from 2,000 to 2,500 yards depending on which tees you play from. The Par 33 layout features five par 3s, two par 4s and two par 5s, making it a fun and scorable layout.
There are back-to-back par 3s on two occasions on the Dartmouth layout – the 5th and 6th, and again at the 8th and 9th. The latter brings you back to the clubhouse and is played over a water hazard, and that is not the only time that water comes into play on the 9-hole course.
