Rick Baril and the main man Robert von Hagge have produced some fine course in Europe and while this may not be their absolute best work it is worthy of our Spanish Top 50.
The club itself was established 100 years before but had to move sites when their lease was not renewed by a socialist council.
The private club moved to the hills on the outskirts and engaged American architect Von Hagge to create 36 holes on what was a difficult site. It was clay and on a hillside but that did not deter Von Hagge, whose dramatic landscaping is the standout feature of Real Hipica.
The South opened in 1997 and gets in our list because it is more playable than the North. Highlights include the 2nd and 16th, which work the land well.
Water hazards and the bunkering and significant mounding make Real Sociedad Hipica Espanola (South) a proper test but it is one that has gained widespread praise.
