Penrhos Park is the only venue on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list that calls Mid-Wales its home. It is somewhat unique compared to most, with a range of caravans and cabins on site as part of the accommodation portfolio. There is also a hotel, which services guests coming to play on the Championship and Red Kite Courses.  

 

Penrhos is home to 27 holes of golf, with the 18-hole Championship Course being designed by David Williams. The course features spectacular views of Cardigan Bay and offers up holes with tree-lined fairways to put an emphasis on driving the ball well. The 9-hole Red Kite Course is perfect for beginners who are first learning the game, while there is also a driving range on site and the option to receive coaching and tuition from a PGA-qualified professional. 

 

When it comes to accommodation, there is a wide variety to choose from. Penrhos Park is home to a hotel with plenty of rooms in. Twin, Double, Family and Accessible Rooms are all available. There is also the choice of self-catering accommodation, with a selection of lodges, cabins and caravans all on site. 

 

For leisure, golf is not the only option for guests of the Welsh resort. There are also tennis courts and a fully equipped gym with cardio, resistance and elliptical machines in. A heated, indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room add to the facilities at Penrhos Park.

Like the majority of the venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, Penrhos Park is blessed to have two golf courses. The Welsh venue plays host to the 18-hole Championship Course and the 9-hole Red Kite Course.  

 

Championship Course 

Designed by David Williams, one of the leading British golf course architects of his generation, and the course makes the most of the spectacular scenery of Cardigan Bay, with the course just a couple of miles from the coastline. The Par 72 layout pushes over 6,600 yards from the back tees and offers up a range of holes and challenges for golfers to enjoy. 

 

It is a tough start to a round at Penrhos. The opener is a par 4 that measures almost 430 yards, and with water behind the green, while the 2nd is the hardest hole on the property. It is a narrow driving hole, and one that gets tighter the further down you hit your drive. The 3rd is the first of the four par 3s on the course. 4 is a quirky dog-leg par 5. It is only 430 yards as the crow flies, but because of the sharp turn in the fairway, it is on the card at more than 500 yards.  

 

Water reappears on the right side of the 6th hole and 9th hole, with the latter being a good birdie opportunity at just 325 yards. 11 is more than 200 yards from the tips, the longest par 3 at Penrhos. The 12th follows, the longest hole on the property at more than 565 yards. Get through that and you’re then faced with a trio of tricky par 4s, ahead of the signature 17th. The par 3 plays severely downhill and is much shorter than the carded 170 yards. The closing hole at Penrhos Park has a small water hazard on the right of the landing zone, and then runs across the fairway, just to make you think one last time as you come to the conclusion of your round.  

 

Red Kite Course 

The Red Kite Course is the 9-hole offering at Penrhos Park. There is a mixture of par 3 and par 4 holes on the Red Kite Course, and it is the perfect place for experienced golfers to warm up ahead of taking on the Championship Course. It also offers a suitable course for beginners to the game to learn about the nuances of golf, including the short game and course management.

The hotel has a range of rooms on offer – in Twin, Double, Family and Accessible forms. The Double and Twin Rooms are the same, just with the option of which bed type is equipped, while the Family Rooms have a double bed, single bed and sofa bed to accommodate the entire brood. The Accessible Rooms can come with either double or twin beds and come equipped with an en-suite wet room to make bathing easier for those that require adaptations.  

 

Away from the hotel building, the Welsh venue has a wide variety of cabins, caravans and lodges for guests to rent out for the duration of their stay. They come in a range of two- and three-bedroom options, with several of the log cabins coming with their own private spa pool for guests to relax and unwind. The caravans offer another way to enjoy a self-catering trip to Mid-Wales, also coming with either two or three bedrooms.  

Golf is not the only thing to do during your time at Penrhos Park, with plenty of leisure activities available at the Welsh resort. There are tennis courts on site, along with a health and leisure club which includes a gym and spa. 

 

The gym is fully equipped, with a wide range of cardiovascular, elliptical and resistance machines, along with a range of free weights. For those that enjoy swimming, there is a heated indoor pool, which also doubles up as part of the spa facilities. A sauna and steam room add to the amenities available to guests and members of the venue.  

Where is Penrhos Park?  
Penrhos Park is located on the western coastline of Wales, just outside the village of Llanrhystud. The town of Aberystwyth is ten miles to the north, while both Swansea and Cardiff are around a two-hour drive from Penrhos.  

What is the nearest airport and station to Penrhos Park?  
Aberystwyth is also the home to the nearest train station to Penrhos Park. It is ten miles from the resort, and the end of the line for trains from Shrewsbury, Carmarthen and Newtown. 

 

Cardiff Airport is the closest major international airport to Penrhos Park, but it is still more than two hours away. For a wider selection of flights, visitors may choose to land at either Bristol Airport or Manchester Airport. The latter is the busiest airport in the north of England, while Bristol services the western side of the country. Both are around three hours from Penrhos Park by road.  

What golf facilities does Penrhos Park offer?  

Along with the Championship and Red Kite Courses, Penrhos Park also has decent practice facilities for golfers to enjoy. It is currently the only floodlit driving range in Mid-Wales, with a row of covered bays to allow golfers to practice whatever the conditions.  

Does Penrhos Park offer golf lessons?  
There is a resident PGA-qualified professional on site at Penrhos Park who is on hand to provide lessons and coaching for golfers of all abilities. Both individual and group coaching sessions are available at the Wesh venue.

The price of a green fee at Penrhos Park changes throughout the year, depending on the season. It is also different depending on whether it is a weekday or weekend. There are also stay & play packages available at the resort.
