La Cala (Europa)

La Cala (Europa)

The third of the courses to open at this Andalucian 'super resort', but a strong contender to be its No.1.

Europa was designed by Cabell Robinson, the American architect who has made such a mark in Iberia and loved his time in Spain so much that he now lives there.

Robinson also laid out Asia and America at La Cala but some believe it is the Europa - opened in 2005 - that is his finest work here.

The Europa is the most spacious and least quirky, with lots of gently undulating fairways snaking between residence-free hills.

It has, in my opinion, the resort’s best nine holes – namely its second half – and arguably the best hole on the property, the intriguing and exacting two-shot 4th. The imminent bunker renovation here will take it to the next level.

Europa is perhaps a little less distinctive than the other two and although there are changes in elevation, there are also plenty of classy holes on the valley floor.

Indeed the stretch on the back nine along the valley is perhaps the best of anything at La Cala.

Expect plenty of variety to the holes, and the look of them, while the barrancas that are such a feature of courses in southern Spain keep you honest.
