Carmarthen Golf Club, located just four miles from the south Welsh town of Carmarthen, is a beautiful parkland course in the Gwili Valley. 

 

JH Taylor, a five-time winner of the Open Championship, was the man behind the design of the golf course, which opened in 1907. 

 

Over its history, Carmarthen has played host to both the Men’s and Ladies’ Welsh Team Championships, and the course remains a challenge for golfers of all abilities.

Carmarthen Golf Club has been around for well over a century, having first been founded back in 1907.  

 

The course runs through the Gwili Valley, and the 18-hole layout was originally designed by JH Taylor – a man who has also designed the likes of Royal Birkdale, Hindhead and the Red Course at Frilford Heath. 

 

The club has played host to several national and county tournaments throughout its history, including both the Men’s and Ladies’ Welsh Team Championships.  

The course at Carmarthen, designed and laid out by five-time Open Champion JH Taylor, runs through the valley, and offers spectacular views of Carmarthen Bay and the Welsh countryside. The course plays as a Par 71, with four par 3s and three par 5s, one of which comes at the last. At 6,200 yards from the tips, it is not the longest course in the Wales list, but there are plenty of challenges.
 

The layout starts strong with a tough par 4 of almost 440 yards. The drive must be accurate with out of bounds on the right and trees down the left. The elevated tee on the 2nd makes this par 5 reachable in two as you will get that bit more distance with a good drive. Out of bounds comes into play down the right from the tee, while anything left will find thick trees and rough. The 3rd is a short par 4, but with out of bounds down the right once again, it does not make it an easy tee shot. 

 

The tough start at Carmarthen continues with the uphill par 4 4th hole. It is only 316 yards, but it plays much more than that, so take one extra club to get it up the hill for your approach. 5 is the hardest hole on the course, playing uphill as a dog-leg right and more than 400 yards. The 6th is the second of the three par 5s, before you get to a run of two par 3s in three holes to finish the front nine. Neither 7 nor 9 are long, both less than 140 yards, but they each have multiple bunkers to catch any errant shots. The 8th is another tough par 4, with the par 3s giving some relief.  

 

The fairway bunker on the left of the 10th must be avoided if you are to reach this par 4 green in two. 11 and 12 are shorter par 4s, but the latter of the two is the hardest hole on the back nine. An accurate drive must be hit on the 12th with trees running down either side. 13 is another short par 4, at 145 yards, but plays slightly uphill so take one club more. 14 is a drivable par 4 if you can find the slope on the other side of the crest, which will take your ball down to the green, only 305 yards away. 

 

The closing stretch at Carmarthen begins with the tricky par 3 15th – the longest of the par 3s at the Welsh venue. It is carded at 194 yards, with a greenside bunker and trees all around. A pair of par 4s come next, with the 17th being one of the harder holes on the property, before the closing par 5 18th – the longest hole at Carmarthen. Playing 555 yards from the tips, and with out of bounds down the entirety of the right side, the closing hole is anything but easy! 

Where is Carmarthen Golf Club located?  
Carmarthen Golf Club is one of several courses located in the southwestern corner of Wales. Carmarthen is four miles south of the golf club, with the A40 and A48 running along the southern side. The former runs through to London, with the A48 running to Gloucester from Carmarthen.  

 

The town is also home to the nearest train station to the golf club, also four miles from the venue. There are plenty of services which run through the station, including the West Wales lines to Fishguard, Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock. To the east, trains from Carmarthen run to Swansea, Cardiff, Crewe, Manchester Piccadilly, and London Paddington, with each service running serval times per day. 

 

For international travellers visiting south Wales, there are several options for flights. Swansea Airport is the closest to Carmarthen, but Cardiff Airport is the busiest in the country. That sits 90 minutes from the venue, while Bristol Airport, the eighth busiest airport in the United Kingdom, is around two hours from Carmarthen and across the border in England.

Along with the 18-hole golf course, Carmarthen Golf Club is also home to its own driving range, which is available to both guests and members. The range sits at the southeastern section of the property, and there is also a putting green and short game area next to the 1st tee.
