Celtic Manor is the home to three glorious 18-hole courses. Most know the resort for being the host to the Ryder Cup, which was played on the Twenty Ten Course. The resort also has the Roman Road and the Montgomerie Courses, which are also among the best in Wales. 

 

The resort was previously host to the Wentwood Hills and the Coldra Woods courses. The latter was a par 59 academy course that was replaced by the Montgomeire Course, while nine holes from the Wentwood Hills Course were used in the design and construction of the Twenty Ten Course.  

 

The venue has played host to the Wales Open on the DP World Tour on multiple occasions. The Roman Road was the original host of the tournament, with the Twenty Ten Course taking it on in recent years. Paul McGinley, Paul Lawrie, Ian Poulter, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Graeme McDowell, Alex Noren and Joost Luiten are among the big names to have won the tournament. 

 

Twenty Ten Course 

The Twenty Ten Course was designed by Ross McMurray, and the course became the first course to be purpose-built for the Ryder Cup. It opened in 2007, three years before the biennial tournament made its way to South Wales. The course measures in at almost 7,500 yards from the tips, with three of the par 5s playing at more than 600 yards. Thankfully for amateurs, there are a range of teeing options to make playing the Twenty Ten Course more enjoyable.  

 

The 3rd is the first of the signature holes on the Twenty Ten, and it was also the hole that Marcus Armitage and Nicolas Colsaerts took part in the DP World Tour’s 14 Club Challenge. It is a 170-yard carry over water to find the green, with anything short seeing a second ball come out of the bag.  

 

11, 12 and 13 all feature water, with the 13th playing like the 3rd hole. It is the shortest hole on the course but plays every bit of its yardage with it being entirely over water. The 15th is a risk reward short par 4. Those playing safe will go down the fairway and then across to the green. However, there is a gap in the trees to allow for those who want to take the green on with driver. The closing hole on the Twenty Ten plays on the side of a hill and is a lengthy par 5. The approach is played over water to the green, with the clubhouse watching on in the background. 

 

Montgomerie Course 

As the name suggests Colin Montgomerie was the man behind the Montgomerie Course at Celtic Manor, which opened three years prior to the Scot being captain of the European side that won the Ryder Cup on the Twenty Ten Course.  

 

The 3rd hole, one of just two par 5s on the Par 69 Montgomerie layout, was named by Jeff Barr in the ‘1001 Golf Holes You Must Play Before You Die’. The Scot went back to his roots with the design, throwing in some links-style pot bunkers for golfers to avoid during a round on the Montgomerie.  

 

Roman Road Course 

The Roman Road Course was the first golf course at Celtic Manor, opened in 1995. Designed by the great Robert Trent Jones Sr, the Roman Road Course is a par 70 layout which overlooks the Severn Estuary. 

 

Ten holes are played on the northern side of the road, with the other eight on the southern side of the road. The 16th is the shortest hole on the entire property at just 141 yards from the back tees. The 17th then plays across the flight path of tee shots on 16 as a cross-over, with both tee shots being hit over a small pond.  

The Celtic Manor Hotel is a part of the Celtic Collection, a group which has hotels and lodges across Wales. There are a wide range of rooms at the hotel, which is the centrepiece of the resort.  

 

The hotel plays host to Superior, Deluxe and Family Rooms with the latter coming in three different options to suit several types of families. The Signature Collection at the hotel offers Signature Rooms, Signature Suites, Deluxe Suites, and the Presidential Suite, which is the best of the best at the property.  

 

The resort is also home to a selection of Hunter Lodges, which is the perfect accommodation option for larger groups who are happy with a self-catering stay. They are the most private offering in the Celtic Manor Resort but remain within the grounds of the resort so guests can enjoy all the amenities and facilities.  

 

There is a superb range of gastronomic options at the Celtic Manor Resort, with the Rib Smokehouse & Grill, The Grill, and Steak on Six all offering a similar array of food, while PAD provides an Asian influence on their choices. The Olive Tree, Rafters and Newbridge on Usk add to the dining options.  

There are a range of wellness facilities at the Celtic Manor Resort. The Forum Spa was voted Spa of the Year at the Welsh Hair & Beauty Awards in 2023, and features 16 relaxing treatment rooms for guests to unwind in. It is part of the Forum Health Club, while there is also Dylan’s Health Club and the Ocius Treatment Rooms, all being part of the resort.  

 

There are also plenty of activities for the family, with lots of action aimed at the younger audience. There is a range of nets and ropewalks in the trees, while kids can also get involved in mini-golf, laser combat, axe throwing and much more. 

Where is Celtic Manor?  
Celtic Manor is the leading Welsh venue on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, and it is less than four miles from the centre of Newport. Cardiff is only 15 miles to the west, while the English border is around the same distance to the east. 

What is the nearest airport and station to Celtic Manor?  
Newport Train Station is around five miles from Celtic Manor, and has trains from London Paddington, Portsmouth, Cardiff and Manchester hourly throughout the day.  

 

Cardiff Airport is the nearest international airport to Celtic Manor, with TUI Airways using the airport as a hub and flying to several European destinations. Only 30 miles from the resort is Bristol Airport, which also has easyJet, Jet2.com and Ryanair, along with TUI, that use the airport as a base. There are more flights and more destinations from Bristol than Cardiff.  

What golf facilities does Celtic Manor offer?  
As well as three 18-hole courses, Celtic Manor is also home to a Golf Academy. There is a 28-bay driving range, over two tiers, with each bay having the latest TopTracer technology so golfers can use the tech to perfect shots, play games and enjoy practice.  

 

There is also a specific short game area with three chipping greens, all of which have artificial hitting areas around them so they can be used throughout the year. Celtic Manor also has an Indoor Putting Studio which can be used in lessons with qualified professionals.  

 

Thanks to the nature of the resort, there are two clubhouses at Celtic Manor. The first services both the Roman Road Course and the Montgomerie Course, while the second was custom built alongside the Twenty Ten Course ready for the Ryder Cup and overlooks the closing hole of the golf course.

Lessons and coaching are available from the Celtic Manor Golf Academy. There are a range of qualified PGA professionals on hand to provide that coaching, which can use the TopTracer technology available on the driving range. The Indoor Putting Studio is also used for those wanting to hone their skills with the flat stick.
