A Brief History of Carlow Golf Club (Deerpark)

The club was originally founded in 1899 as the Leinster Golf Club, with a 9-hole course laid out in Gotham, around five miles from Carlow.

The name was quickly changed to the Carlow Golf Club, and the club moved to its current location in 1922. Cecil Barcroft was the man to design the original course.

Changes were made in the late 1930s, with several greens replaced, along with bunkers added and improved. Since then, only cosmetic changes have occurred at Carlow, with the course being lengthened in recent years.

Carlow Golf Club (Deerpark) Review | NCG Top 100s: Ireland

The Deerpark Course at Carlow Golf Club is a true test of a golfer’s ability. Although there are some wide-open holes, there are also plenty of hazards on the Deerpark, including water hazards, tree-lined fairways and plenty of sand traps. It is not the longest course that you will find on the NCG Top 100s: Ireland list, at 6,600 yards from the tips, but you’ll have to play well to score well at Carlow.

The Deerpark starts with a strong par 4 of almost 440 yards from the back tees. There is sand and water by the green, after hitting your tee shot over a semi-blind rise. The 2nd is a short par 4 at just 315 yards, but if you stray too far right off the tee, then you will be in the trees or even a small pond. The green is long and narrow, with three bunkers guarding it. The 3rd is the opening par 3 on the course, and is a short one at just 150 yards. A narrow green is guarded by four greenside bunkers. The 4th plays as an uphill par 4, and brings you to the downhill 5th, the opening par 5 on the property. At 550 yards, it is lengthy, but the longer hitters can reach in two with a good drive.

The par 3 6th sees you hit over a valley to the green and it is followed by the hardest hole on the Deerpark Course. The par 4 7th hole plays 455 yards from the tips, and as a slight dog-leg from right to left around a pair of small trees on the corner of the fairway. There are also trees down the entirety of the right side of the hole. The 8th plays downhill from one of the more elevated tee shots on the course, while the front nine ends with a dog-leg right par 4. There is plenty of space on the right for tee shots that leak that way.

At just 300 yards, the 10th opens up the back nine with the shortest par 4 on the course. Longer hitters may be tempted to take the green on with their drives, but most will lay up short of the bunker on the left side of the fairway and the water on the right. 11 is a tough par 4 that plays uphill, while the 12th has a tricky green to find, with slopes running off in each direction. 13 is another par 3 with bunkers guarding the green, while the 14th is the longest par 4 on the Deerpark, pushing past 475 yards from the tips.

Don’t go right off the 15th tee, as you’ll struggle to find your ball in the thick trees. The narrow green is tricky to find, especially with trees to the right and a sand trap on the left. The closing stretch continues with the 16th, a picturesque par 4 that plays to a fairway that narrows the further down you hit the ball. The penultimate hole is the last par 3, and the shortest hole on the Deerpark Course, with the closing hole being a short par 5. A wide fairway then turns right to left around the trees and plays up towards the clubhouse.
