Reverse overlap explained

How to form the perfect grip

Why change your grip?

One part of your game that you have probably not considered for a while is your putting grip – yet there is a very good chance that you can make some real improvements with some more solid fundamentals. The reverse overlap is the most popular putting grip as it helps to combine both hands and stops the right one becoming too dominant.

Sticky fingers

By gripping the club too much in the fingers it makes the hold on the club too tight and adds tension. You need to grip the club as softly as possible – it should feel like someone could pull the club out of your hands.

In the lifeline

Firstly place your left hand on the grip, ensuring the lifeline is running down the side of the grip. I have extended my index finger to help me achieve this.

Hands together

Just beneath this, rest your right hand on the grip, link both hands by lifting the index finger of your left hand and wrapping it over the fingers of your right hand.

Left palm is crucial

There are a number of grips (Cross-handed, claw, split-handed, Langer's grip, box, palms facing, the pencil) and all have their strengths, with no right or wrong, as long as the player feels comfortable. But always remember the position of the grip in the left hand palm.
