The third senior major championship of 2024 is the US Senior Open, but where will the event take place this year?

The event has a lengthy history, dating all the way back to 1980. The tournament has been held at 36 different venues around the United States in its four-decade history.

The event is the third of five senior majors, following the Regions Tradition and the Senior PGA Championship. The Kaulig Companies Championship and the Senior Open Championship are yet to come in 2024.

Players who feature on both the PGA Champions Tour and the European Legends Tour will be in action this week at the US Senior Open, which will be held at Newport Country Club.

The venue is a historic one. Newport Country Club was one of the five founding venues of the USGA, alongside Shinnecock Hills, St. Andrew’s Golf Club, Chicago Golf Club and The Country Club in Brookline.

This will be the first time a senior major championship has been held at Newport, with the US Amateur Championship (1895, 1995), US Open (1895) and the US Women’s Open (2006) all having visited the venue.

Two greats of the game, in Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam, have been victorious at Newport Country Club.

In terms of the US Senior Open, Germany’s Bernhard Langer (below) is the defending champion. In recent years, the likes of Padraig Harrington, Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker and David Toms have all been successful.

Frequently Asked Questions about the US Senior Open

When and where will the US Senior Open take place?

The venue for the event changes each year, but for the 2024 edition, the tournament returns to a familiar home. Newport Country Club, one of the five founding members of the USGA, will play host to the event for the first time, which will take place from June 27-30.

Who won last year’s event?

Germany’s Bernhard Langer made history by becoming the oldest man to win the US Senior Open with his two-shot victory at SentryWorld in Stevens Point last year.

He won by two shots from Steve Stricker – the 2019 winner of the US Senior Open – to claim the 12th senior major championship of his career, extending his record.

What is the history around the US Senior Open?

The US Senior Open is one of the youngest senior major championships, only dating back to 1980. For the first edition of the tournament, the lower age limit was set at 55, but it was brought down to 50 – in line with the PGA Champions Tour guidelines – for the 1981 edition of the competition.

The event is one of several administered by the USGA – which also runs the US Open, US Women’s Open, US Senior Women’s Open, and all the amateur championships, from seniors through to boys’ and girls’.

Since its inception, a total of 36 different venues have played host to the US Senior Open, with Saucon Valley being the only venue to have hosted the tournament on three occasions.

Broadmoor, the Inverness Club, Oakland Hills, Omaha, Salem, and Scioto are all two-time hosts of the event.

Only one man has been victorious in the US Senior Open on three occasions. Miller Barber won three of the first six editions, winning the event in 1982, 1984 and 1985. He is also one of just three men to successfully defend the title.

Gary Player and Allen Doyle are the others, while Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin, Kenny Perry and Bernhard Langer have all been victorious at the US Senior Open twice.

Have any golfers won both the US Open and US Senior Open?

This has happened, and on multiple occasions. In total, eight players have been victorious at both the US Open and US Senior Open during their careers.

They are:

  • Arnold Palmer
  • Billy Casper
  • Gary Player
  • Orville Moody
  • Lee Trevino
  • Jack Nicklaus
  • Hale Irwin
  • Jim Furyk

Furyk was the last man to achieve this double feat, thanks to his victory at this tournament in 2021 – 18 years after the American had won the US Open.

Who is in the field for the third senior major of the year at Newport Country Club?

Unsurprisingly, some of the biggest names in senior golf will be teeing it up in Rhode Island this week.

Defending champion Bernhard Langer will be back to defend his title, as he continues his recovery from an Achilles injury. Steve Stricker – a seven-time senior major champion and former US Senior Open winner – will be one of the favourites for victory. Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els, Colin Montgomerie, Retief Goosen, Vijay SIngh and Alex Cejka will also be in action.

How do golfers qualify for the US Senior Open?

There are plenty of different criteria in which golfers can make it into the 156-man field for the tournament.

They are as follows:

  • Winners of the US Senior Open in the last ten years
  • Winners of the US Senior Open since 2010 who are yet to reach 66-years-old
  • Top 15 and ties from last year’s US Senior Open
  • The low amateur from last year’s US Senior Open
  • US Open winners in their first 10 years of eligibility as a senior
  • Winners of the Senior PGA Championship from the last ten years
  • Winners of the Senior Open Championship from the last five years

  • Winners of PGA Tour events in the last six years
  • Top 10 players from last year’s Legends Tour Order of Merit
  • Winners of the Masters Tournament, Open Championship and PGA Championship in the last ten years (now eligible as a senior)
  • Winners of the US Amateur Championship from the last ten years (providing they are still an amateur)
  • Finalists from last year’s US Mid-Amateur and US Senior Amateur Championships (providing they are still an amateur)
  • Playing members of the last five Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams (USA, Europe, International)
  • Playing members of the Walker Cup teams in either 2021 or 2023

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
