‘I would rather win three times’: Jon Rahm looks past the numbers after incredible 63

Jon Rahm’s 63 has set a new scoring record at Hoylake. But the Spaniard unsurprisingly isn’t that interested in numbers

They’d never seen a 64 at a Royal Liverpool Open, never mind 63. But even though he fired the lowest score ever seen in a major championship at Hoylake, Jon Rahm isn’t finished yet.

“I would rather win three times and never shoot 63,” said the Spaniard, who put the capitals into ‘Moving Day’ with an incredible third-round charge.

“It is my lowest round on a links golf course, my lowest round in an Open Championship. Also, the lowest round shot on this course. It feels really good, but there is a lot of work to do tomorrow.

“The job to do today was to come out today and give myself the best opportunity I could. Whenever you get a birdie, you think about one more. That is all you can do.

“It feels really, really good. We practice so hard, and at least a lot of us expect certain things. It gets to a point when you visualise it and you see how it’s supposed to happen. If I do this properly, I will hit it here, that sort of thing.

“It doesn’t happen often where you see those shots come out the way they are supposed to and you put them in the spot you’re supposed to. It’s very unusual.”

Jon Rahm: Hoylake record could be just the beginning

Rahm was two-over coming into the third round, after opening up with rounds of 74 and 70, but had cut a frustrated figure around Royal Liverpool.

“I was playing good golf, and I knew what I was capable of,” he said. “It was mistakes that I made. I gave up the shots and at major championships, it’s very costly.

“That was mainly it. That is what I was feeling. I knew I was playing better, and my swing and my game felt better than the scores I was shooting.

“Yesterday’s [Friday’s] finish is an example. I was two-under, coming down 18 with a chance to finish three-under and I make a stupid bogey from 30 yards away. That is just an example of it but today was a complete opposite.”

Mention a European country, and Matt will tell you which resorts make the National Club Golfer Top 100s: European Resorts list. He might even throw in who designed the golf course and how many rooms the hotel has got at each one…

Matt got into the game of golf from a young age, following his old man to the local golf club. He fell for the sport, and now can’t seem to go a day without thinking about how to improve his game (Thanks Dad!). Matt has been a member of Howley Hall GC in Leeds since 2020, and is just about managing to maintain a single-figure handicap. He likes to remind people that he once broke 75, but won’t tell people that it was on a shortened course during the winter.

He moved to Leeds after graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a First Class Honours degree in Sports Journalism. Matt joined NCG after almost five years travelling the world with the Professional Squash Association, working on events in all four corners of the globe.

Matt currently plays a Cobra King LTDx driver and RadSpeed 3-wood. TaylorMade monopolise the rest of his bag, with a SIM UDI, M5 irons and both Milled Grind and HI-TOE wedges, along with a Monza Redline putter. He uses a Vice Pro Plus golf ball, because he’s a bit different…

Away from golf, Matt is a Manchester United fan, and a keen runner, having ran the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon (his first and possibly last), in May 2023.
