‘The funniest reply in golf history!’ Poulter rages after new Ryder Cup snub
He was awarded NCG’s ‘Keyboard Warrior of the Year’ in our 2022 honours, and now Ian Poulter has started the new year where he left off after falling out with the Ryder Cup Team Europe Twitter account for failing to acknowledge his birthday.
Yes, you read that correctly.
In a spat which some are coining “the funniest reply in golf history”, Poulter was left fuming after the account posted a video of Francesco Molinari but didn’t wish him or fellow LIV Golf defector Sergio Garcia many happy returns.
Here’s how the squabble played out…
“What’s really an ‘incredible touch’ is the players that helped build the Ryder Cup Europe brand with other players as well,” the Englishman angrily thumbed into his phone. “You just can’t bring yourself to say a simple happy birthday. Sergio Garcia’s birthday [was] yesterday. Unfortunately this says so much.”
Both Poulter and Garcia – as well as other Ryder Cup veterans in Lee Westwood and Henrik Stenson, amonth others – have continued to be ignored by the Team Europe and DP World Tour social media accounts since joining Greg Norman’s Saudi-backed venture in June 2022.
Poulter, with a record of 15-8-2, is labelled Mr Ryder Cup while Garcia is Europe’s record points scorer on 25-13-7, are both European legends, but the pair have been banned by the PGA Tour and face similar fate on this side of the Atlantic pending a court case in February.
As always, Twitter then had a field day following Poulter’s latest complaint, with a host of names in the golf world weighing-in, including his LIV ally Mr Lee Westwood. Here are the very best responses…
But arguably the funniest bit of the whole drama was this…
Classic.
This is not the first time Poults has been left outraged by his social media treatment – or lack of it – since jumping ship to LIV Golf either. Back in August, the Englishman was similarly left fuming after the DP World Tour apparently denied him TV footage during the Czech Masters.
Imagine if he had real problems.
