He’s back again with possibly the most flamboyant clutch putt of all time

Hosung Choi certainly likes to do things differently. On Saturday night he washed his shirt in the shower so that he could wear it again the following day.

“I wanted to keep the good luck to play well again on Sunday.”

It worked a treat as the 46-year-old, famous for his ‘fisherman swing’, won for the third time on the Japan Golf Tour. His closing 67 gave him victory over the money list leader Shugo Imahira and it was this two-shot swing that turned things around at the 71st hole.

Kevin Na, Tiger, Phil Mickelson, even Chi Chi Rodriguez don’t get a look in compared to the South Korean. Earlier this year he played in three PGA Tour events and one on the European Tour, in Kenya, and failed to make the weekend in any of them.

There was a petition to get him into the Waste Management Phoenix Open which didn’t work out but he then made his debut at Pebble Beach.

“I was amazed by the concentration and load of practice that world-class players do. I must try harder.”

But now he’s back to his best, on every level. And he’s up to 162 in the world rankings, sandwiched between Thomas Detry and Richard Sterne, and into the prestigious season finale in Japan.

“My father is 81 years old and he is not well. I really wanted to win and give him good news. This is more than an honour for a player to be in that field. I will do my best until the very end.”
