From two-time major winner to two-time convict
From two-time major winner to two-time convict. Less than a decade on from battling Adam Scott for a second Green Jacket, Angel Cabrera’s downfall has exacerbated again after he was given an additional 28 month prison sentence for assaulting an ex-partner.
The Argentinian was already serving a two-year sentence at Carcel de Bouwer for assaulting, threatening and harassing partner Cecilia Torres Mana between 2016 and 2018.
But now, Cabrera will now serve another two years and four months for assaulting another ex-partner, Micaela Escudero. This is according to Agence France Presse.
“Many say prison is bad, but it’s not the case, prison has done me good,” Cabrera reportedly told the court at his trial.
The 57-year-old has continued to deny any wrongdoing after being extradited back to Cordoba, Argentina in the summer of 2021. This was after being he was arrested in Brazil having spent time “on the run” from his first arrest warrant. Cabrera was also on the country’s ‘red list’ during this period.
A two-time major champion, Cabrera remains the only South American to win either the Masters or the US Open. Nicknamed El Pato (the duck), he claimed the US Open at Oakmont in 2007 before winning the Masters in 2009.
Cabrera’s latest sentence will run concurrently with his first one, which was issued back in July 2021.
