Troia is one of the more unique resorts to make the NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts list, due to the fact that the golf course and the accommodation of the resort are all based on the Troia Peninsula, meaning that it is its own little spot of paradise on the western coast of Portugal.

The landscape, shaped over millennia, is now preserved by strict environmental protection directives that have limited occupation to an area of 1,100 hectares, dotted with apartments, townhouses and single-family homes. Troia Golf is situated in the heart of the Troia Peninsula. The Par 72 lay-out, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr, is there to test even the best golfers. The course runs alongside the beach, with great views of the Arrabida Mountain.

The 3rd is a par-4 that fits perfectly in the landscape with a magnificent sea view, was considered by Robert Trent Jones Sr as one of the best he has ever designed, and he included it in his ideal 18-hole golf course. 

The 4th and 17th holes also play with the beach and the sea on the golfer’s left, making them harder, but also more beautiful at the same time. The closing hole at Troia is a dog-leg left par-5, with an elevated green which is protected by three front bunkers.

Greg McDonald is the Head Professional at Troia Golf, and the Greg McDonald Golf Academy is the home to the best tuition and golf lessons in the region. McDonald is a founder member of the South African PGA and the Sunshine Tour in the country, and now calls Portugal home.

The South African leads the way at Troia, and he provides lessons for all abilities. He also does hour-long lessons, as well as on-course tuition, whether it be 9 or 18-holes, where you can learn about course management and how to play the right shot at the right time. The Greg McDonald Golf Academy also offers lesson packages, to bring the cost of improving your game down.

This is all based out of the Greg McDonald Golf Academy at Troia Golf, which houses a driving range, putting green and two chipping areas, giving you the resources to hone your skills and improve your golfing abilities.

Where is Troia located?
Troia is located on the Troia Peninsula in western Portugal. From Troia, you can see over the water to Setubal in the north, while to the west, there is the large expanse of the North Atlantic Ocean. Due to the nature of where Troia is, Setubal is an hour away by car and ferry, while Lisbon is 90 minutes to the north west.

What is the nearest airport to Troia?
Lisbon international Airport is the nearest airport to Troia that provides daily international flights. As with the above, due to the nature of the Troia Peninsula, you have to drive away before turning back to go towards Lisbon, with the drive to the airport taking around 90 minutes.

What golf facilities does Troia offer?
Troia Golf is home to a driving range where you can work on your long game, along with a putting green and two chipping areas to hone your short game skills before taking on the Championship Course. 

The Clubhouse was built during the refurbishment of the Troia Golf Championship Course in 2008 and designed by architect João Paciência. The changing rooms are located on the north-facing side and connect to the lower floor where the caddy master is, and open directly to the course. In the south part of the building, the lounges and eating areas offer a great view of the Championship Course.

The Greg McDonald Golf Academy, based out of Troia Golf, provides tuition and lessons whatever your abilities and experience of the game. From 30-minute lessons to 9 and 18-hole lessons out on course, McDonald will improve your game.

What are the green fees at Troia?
Due to the climate, golf is pretty much a year round sport at Troia on the western side of Portugal. Because of that, there is just one green fee for 18-holes at Troia Golf. A round will cost €105, with 9-holes costing €80. 

What accommodation is on offer at Troia?
There is plenty of accommodation on offer on the Troia Peninsula, just a few minutes down the road from Troia Golf. The Editory By The Sea, Troia Residence and Aqualuz Troia all provide different styles and varieties of accommodation, to suit the needs of all guests coming to the region.

Is Troia suitable for families?
The majority of rooms, suites and apartments at Troia are family-proof, and there are plenty of activities to keep the children entertained. From exploring the Roman Ruins, to going out on the water, the kids will not be bored on a trip to Troia.

What other resorts and courses are nearby?
There are no other resorts in the region that make it on to the NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts list, but there are a couple of golf courses in the vicinity of Troia. Dunas Comporta, Herdade do Pinheirinho and CostaTerra are all within 25 miles of Troia to the south. Quinta do Peru is the nearest course over the water to the north, but it is at least an hour depending on the ferry times.
