Black Sea Rama | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

Black Sea Rama is the third Bulgarian resort to make the NCG Top 100 European Golf Resorts list, following Lighthouse and Thracian Cliffs. Black Sea Rama offers a championship golf course, wellness centre and a stunning range of villas and apartments located across the property.

The golf course was designed by the great Gary Player. It was the first championship golf course to be designed and constructed in all of Bulgaria, with Player then also going on to be the man behind the design at Thracian Cliffs. Black Sea Rama’s course plays at 200 metres above sea level, to provide glorious views of the Black Sea, while offering a stern test for golfers of all abilities.

Located in the centre of the resort is the practice facility, which provides the perfect place for guests to warm up before a round. The Black Sea Rama Golf Academy also runs out of the facilities, which includes a driving range and short game area. There are three practice greens along with a couple of bunkers for golfers to practise those dreaded sand shots. The Academy also runs lessons and tuition for players of all ages and abilities, with a Junior Academy also being held throughout the summer months.

Away from the golf course, Black Sea Rama is also the home to a Sports & Wellness Centre, which features two hard tennis courts. There is also a fitness centre with a diverse range of gym equipment, and the wellness centre has an extensive list of treatments, including massages, facial treatments, hydrotherapy and more.

In terms of accommodation, Black Sea Rama seems to have a little bit of everything. There is a boutique hotel which has 20 rooms, while there are several forms of villa. The Bell Tower Villas, Individual Villas and Green Villas all offer something slightly different, with the cluster of the former also including the Kids Club at the resort.

Bulgaria is certainly an up and coming nation when it comes to golf and golfing holidays, but Black Sea Rama should definitely be somewhere that you look at.

Black Sea Rama Overview | NCG Top 100s: European Golf Resorts

A Gary Player Design

Like Thracian Cliffs just down the road, the golf course at Black Sea Rama is also a Gary Player design, with the South African being the man behind the 18-hole layout. However, this was the first completed project from the nine-time major champion in Eastern Europe. The course, which was also the first championship golf course in Bulgaria, sits 200 metres above sea level, and provides incredible views over the Black Sea, from which the resort gets its name.

The Par 72, 18-hole lay-out comes in at more than 7,250 yards, making it longer than either of its Bulgarian neighbours. Despite being 200 metres above sea level, the course actually plays relatively flat, and allows golfers to see all the trouble that lies in front of them.

The course opens up with a gentle par-5, before two dog-leg par-4s at the north east of the resort. Water first comes into play on the 4th hole, which turns to the left around one of the several lakes on the property. 5, 6 and 7 also feature water hazards. Three of the last four holes also have water in view from the tee, while the closing hole at Black Sea Rama is a 245 yard par-3, where a par will certainly feel like a birdie.

Black Sea Rama Golf Academy

Along with the stunning championship golf course, Black Sea Rama is also the home to a world class Golf Academy. The Academy occupies more than 1200 square metres of the property.

The state of the art practice facility includes a covered driving range and a short game practice area, which has three practice greens and two bunkers. The range also features an indoor Learning Centre, which has a golf simulator and some of the latest technology to analyse swings.

Krasi Panayotov is the Head Professional at Black Sea Rama, and he is a PGA-qualified professional of both the PGA of GB&I and the Bulgarian PGA. He and his team offer lessons and coaching to golfers of all abilities, helping with learning the fundamentals of the sport, through to tweaking the swings of experienced golfers. Lessons are available in Bulgarian, English and French.

There is also a Kids Golf Academy at the Black Sea Rama Golf Academy. During the summer holidays, Black Sea Rama organises group golf lessons for kids ages 6 to 12 every Saturday morning. These lessons run through the summer, from June to August.
