The Grove | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

The Grove is one of the most well-rounded venues on the NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, with a golf course that has played host to some of the best players in the world. There is also an incredible hotel at The Grove, a wide range of gastronomic options, an outstanding leisure retreat, and extensive grounds that will appeal to dog-owners and families.
The championship golf course at The Grove, designed by American Kyle Phillips, is a masterpiece. He has taken an underwhelming piece of land and created a tricky but scorable golf course, one that has hosted the WGC-American Express Championship and the British Masters in its brief history. There are also great practice facilities and lessons during your time at The Grove.
The Grove Hotel is inside the Grade II-listed mansion on the property and provides accommodation for all parties. Rooms are split into Classic, Deluxe and Superior ranges, while there are 12 recently refurbished suites which are all as unique as the next. The mansion also plays host to family rooms and dog-friendly rooms as well. The list of restaurants at The Grove is extensive, with around-the-world feasts, all-you-can-eat buffets and more.
If guests are looking to relax during a stay at The Grove, then the Seqouia Spa is the place to go. There is an infinity pool, jacuzzi and more, along with 18 treatment rooms where guests can be pampered. Qualified therapists are on hand to provide a range of treatments and massages, with Bamford products in use.

The Grove Overview | NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts

Championship Golf Course

Unlike most of the resorts that you will find on our NCG Top 100s: GB&I Golf Resorts list, The Grove only has one golf course. However, it is a sublime piece of design from American Kyle Phillips, the man who was also behind the design at Kingsbarns, and one that has played host to both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour in the past.
Its crowning glory came just three years after the resort was opened. The WGC-American Express Championship was played at The Grove in 2006. A certain Tiger Woods was the victor, and it was the only time the tournament was held in the United Kingdom. The Grove also played host to the British Masters on the DP World Tour a decade later, with Sweden’s Alex Noren victorious.
The greens are smooth and usually very quick, especially when you finish above the hole. Chipping, too, is testing because many of the greens are slightly raised. But as long as you do not play off the very tips, there is plenty of room from the tee. If you do not try to take overly aggressive lines and attempt to carry the enormous bunkers that lie on the elbows of doglegs there is nothing to stop you scoring competently – and that always makes a visit to a championship course that bit more special.
The 3rd hole is a clever one, as it calls for players to drive towards a stream and trees. However, those are out of reach. The drive on 14 is tricky, as most of the fairway is hidden behind a huge fairway bunker. At less than 390 yards from the tips, this is one of the easier par 4s at The Grove. Two holes later and you find yourself at the last par 3 of the round. The 16th is 184 yards, but it can trick you, as there are bunkers in front of the green. However, there is plenty of space behind those bunkers before you get to the putting surface. Take one club more and do not go right!

The Grove Hotel

The Grove Hotel, based in the Grade II-listed mansion, has many accommodation options. There are six distinct types of rooms, ranging from the Classic Room all the way through Deluxe Rooms and Superior Rooms. There are also 12 recently refurbished suites, all of which are unique.

Classic and Deluxe Rooms on the ground floor of the West Wing of the mansion are dog-friendly - meaning that you do not have to leave your furry friend at home – and there is plenty of outdoor space for your four-legged companion to roam around in.
There is plenty on offer in terms of food in The Grove. From an around-the-world feast at The Glasshouse, which holds an all-you-can-eat buffet, to new takes on old favourites at The Stables. There is also an Indian banquet at Madhu’s, and sushi in The Lounges.
