Captain watch..

Ryder Cup 2016

One of the more interesting sideshows in the Ryder Cup is seeing the captains take each other on in a battle of wits. At Gleneagles.

European captain Paul McGinley was praised for his meticulous preparation and manmanagement skills, while division in the camp and question marks over his decision making defined Tom Watson’s ill-fated reign.

The 2016 instalment of ‘Captain Watch’ has the potential to be just as fascinating. Clarke, the 2011 Open champion and popular Ryder Cup hero, essentially just has to follow the blueprint laid down by McGinley.

Rest assured, Clarke will have kept a close eye on proceedings. Love is the first man in charge of the US since the task force, set up in the wake of the 2014 defeat, analysed America’s approach to the competition.

He will have left no stone unturned and also has the benefit of having been captain already, four years ago at Medinah. Perhaps this match is destined for a tie.

Both captains earned 11 1/2 points in their playing careers and guess what happened when they met in the singles in 2004 – that’s right, it finished all square.
