Titleist GT2 Fairway Wood Review

What’s new? How much does it cost? And how does it perform? Max McVittie brings you the low down on Titleist GT2 Fairway wood.

The much-talked-about, tour-credited Titleist GT metals range has arrived. Week in and week out, the GT drivers and woods have seemed to be a constant on our screens but not in our hands—until now!

We have heard about the GT drivers, but just how good are the fairway woods? Find out in our Titleist GT2 fairway wood review…

4.5 star review
NCG SUMMARY

This is a great fairway wood for people who have a shallower angle of attack and sweep the golf ball. The classic Titleist look really catches the eye and gives it that premium look.

It had all the qualities for any handicapper to be able to use it. It was light and easy to swing, delivered great distance and lots of added forgiveness.

PROS

  • Very forgiving
  • Felt light
  • Forgiving
  • Looked great at address

CONS

  • Not as much as adjustability as other models

Titleist GT2 Fairway Wood Review: First Impressions

The whole experience couldn’t have been more exciting. Testing Titleist’s new GT fairway wood range in their performance centre at Woburn Golf Club. It was truly one of the best golfing experiences I’ve had.

Could you have a better first golf club fitting? It’s definitely going to be a tough one to beat.

Titleist GT2 Fairway Wood Review

What struck me first was how good they looked. The crown of the GT metals has kept the same classic Titleist look that we have all fallen in love with over the years. It looked fantastic at address, which Titleist attributes to the new Seamless Thermoform Crown they have developed, which allows for new technology without giving up that classic gloss Titleist look.

I initially really liked the feel of the club; it felt lighter than my own 3-wood. I was able to swing the GT2 a lot more freely than I normally do with a fairway wood.

NCG Verdict

Being a mid-handicapper and someone who, therefore, isn’t particularly consistent with their golf swing, forgiving clubs are about as essential as golf balls. The GT2 Fairway Wood certainly demonstrated it had that.

As I began to test the 3-wood, I was immediately met with the pleasing familiarity of the classic Titleist sound as the ball flew off the club face.

Titleist say the GT2 is designed for those looking for that extra bit of confidence from their fairway wood. They say the club offers generational technologies to help deliver a more consistent launch, distance average, and improved forgiveness. The brand is adamant the club delivers the same qualities, even from tight lies.

From my experience testing out the GT2, the improvement that stood out from my own 3-wood was the height of my ball flight that I could achieve. I tend to hit a low fade with my fairway woods and drivers. Both off the tee and from the deck, most of the time, the ball flight I produce stays relatively low, which can help with distance but does, of course, limit shots into greens on par 5s.

Despite not changing anything with my swing, the GT2 consistently allowed me to fly the ball higher, as you can see from the Trackman graphic below.

Titleist credits the GT2’s higher launch with the repositioning of the centre of gravity, with the CG being pushed lower and closer to the face. This also allows for lower spin and a higher launch than the previous TSR2 model.

However, I continued to struggle to control my ball flight from left to right with both clubs, which is ultimately the reason why I was fitted with the GT3, which has more adjustability. I tend to over fade the ball, which was reduced with GT2, but not enough.

In terms of distance, I was able to achieve a more consistent carry, even though I had one freak longer shot with my own club. I’m not the biggest hitter, so any club that can help squeeze extra yardage is valuable.

My normal carry yardage with a 3-wood is normally around 170 with my lowball flight. I was able to reach this yardage more consistently with the GT2. The difference wasn’t overly stark to that of my own club, but still longer. This could be down to the shallower face the GT2 has, which doesn’t particularly suit my swing – more ideal for players with a sweeping delivery.

Consistency was a big plus in terms of performance. The club’s forgiveness undoubtedly allows for this consistency with the data.

Moving away from the data. The feel of the club was highly impressive. I seemed to strike the ball out of the middle more than I do normally. The good shots felt great throughout testing the GT2 fairway wood, and looked a lot nicer in the air. But, possibly even more crucial for someone of my golfing ability, my bad shots didn’t perform too badly. I didn’t feel as though I was losing control of my shots at any point using the GT2.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, I wasn’t fitted into the GT2, as my the steep attack angle of my swing meant that I performed better with more depth to my club head. Hence, the GT3 was the better fit for more, highlighting the importance of getting a club fitting.

But, I did see a performance improvement, especially with the trajectory of my ball flight and a more consistent carry yardage. I found the GT2 easy to strike as well, and looking back, the forgiveness was a real plus. It is something that will appeal to a great number of players.

Max Mcvittie

A bit of a late bloomer to the game of golf, Max fell in love with the sport when he attended Saturday coaching sessions down at his local golf club after being inspired by friends and family members.

Max has remained a member of Eden Golf Club in Carlisle for a number of years now as he looks to get his handicap down into single figures. Most of his golfing career has been spent battling a permanent slice off the tee, which has led to some ugly rounds.

Having studied at the University of Sunderland, Max is starting out his dream career in sports journalism. During his time at university, he picked up valuable work experience at Reach PLC, BBC Radio Cumbria and GiveMeSport, whilst also getting work published in the Teesside Live. He also spent time working at a local weekly newspaper, Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser, as a general news reporter partially covering some local sport just north of the border in Langholm.

Max has just started his journey with the NCG working as the assistant equipment editor. He looks forwarded to reviewing the latest golf equipment, taking up an interest in reviews when buying his first golf club, a Cleveland RTX wedge.

With his bag not going under too many changes throughout the last few years, Max carries an M3 driver, Titleist GT3 Fairway Wood, M2 hybrid, a set of M2 irons, Callaway Jaws wedges and a TaylorMade Spider putter. And yes, Max is a bit of a self-proclaimed TaylorMade fan boy.
