Talking point: Four new Major winners in one year

Danny Willett, Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson and Jimmy Walker – how many of those names did you predict at the start of the year?

No Major for Rory Mcllory, Jordan Spieth or Jason Day in 2016 – the ‘Big Three’ title no longer has any standing.

Every Major has been completely wide open and highly competitive.

It’s great for golf that there are so many talented players in the game and no one is head and shoulders above the rest of the field.

Bring on 2017!

Shot of the day: Thongchai Jaidee

Jason Day’s monster putt for birdie on the par-4 6th in the third round, his gutsy approach shot on the 18th in the final round to set up an eagle, Jimmy Walker’s bunker shot on the 10th were all sensational, but the ridiculous backspin Thongchai Jaidee generated on the par-4 3rd to claim a birdie has to be winner.

Behave yourself, Thongchai lad.

We are surprised by: Jimmy Walker’s nerve

With Major winners Jason Day and Henrik Stenson breathing down his neck, Jimmy Walker would perhaps be forgiven for letting the pressure get to him.

Walker has never won a Major, nor ever really come close, and to hold off world No 1 Day takes real guts.

The fearless American kept his composure and was ice cool on the greens to claim his maiden crown.

We are not surprised by: Rich Beem having a laugh

The 2002 champion chipped in on the par-4 5th hole and was mobbed by the watching crowd as he celebrated his birdie.

The standard high-fives, which our American friends love so much, ensued as Beem continued to lap up every moment of a great weekend for the American.

The expectation for the Sky Sports commentator before Thursday would have been for him to miss the cut, as he had done in the last three years, but Beem turned back the clock to make the weekend and finish with a decent score of +4.

He deserved a high-five from everyone at Baltusrol.

Worst outfit: Billy Horschel

The day at the PGA

There is something oddly hypnotic about American Billy Horschel’s psychedelic trousers – and not in a good way.

Well, maybe if stand at an angle and squint…no, sorry I can’t say anything nice about Billy’s pair of curtains.

Best quote: Butch Harmon on crowd screamers

“Somebody throw these people out who scream, please!”

Well said, Butch. Well said.

Best tweet: What, Jason Sobel again?

It was a surprising, yet justified, decision by the PGA of America to implement preferred lies during the final round after heavy rain hit Baltusrol.

It created a strange situation where players completing their third rounds were playing the ball down in the same conditions those playing the final round were playing the ball up.
