Yelverton: A delightful moorland course that poses a challenge to golfers of all standards

Why we'd rather be playing this delightful moorland course

Yelverton Golf Club is situated in one of the most scenic parts of Devon in the southwest of England. It is surrounded by Dartmoor National Park with stunning views across the park and into Cornwall.

History

Yelverton is a delightful moorland course, designed in 1904 by Herbert Fowler and completed in 1923 when the 18-hole course was opened. Between 1934 and 1936 James Braid redesigned a few holes on the back nine, complementing Fowler’s initial design, and the course has matured and developed since then.

During World War One half of the course was returned to agricultural use in aid of the war effort and then, at the end of the war, an agreement was signed between the club, the commoners, and the landowner (Sir Henry Lopes) for the ‘laying out and use for play of an 18-hole golf course’ on Roborough Down. The land which the course roams was once owned by Sir Francis Drake and today is owned by the Lopes family as part of the Maristow Estate.

What makes it special

The course has outstanding views across Dartmoor and over Cornwall, and both Fowler and Braid incorporated some of the old mine workings as natural hazards to challenge golfers of all standards. This has created dramatic features and remarkable hazards which are encountered throughout the round. The course has played host to many top-quality competitions, including the EGU Men’s Senior Amateur Championships in 2006.
