Wyndham Championship preview
The Wyndham Championship wraps up the regular season on the PGA Tour with the FedEx Cup playoffs starting next week with The Northern Trust.
Even with the majors complete for another year, this is still a very busy time for the players with some of the best in the world set to compete in all four playoff events and then the Ryder Cup in the next six weeks.
As a result, there’s no surprise to see that plenty are skipping the Wyndham this week.
Henrik Stenson is back to defend his title and he has a lot of work to do if he is to make the European Ryder Cup side. A win here might just get the job done for the Swede.
Webb Simpson – who has already locked up his spot in team USA – is the pre-tournament favourite as he comes into the week off the back of solid form and having finished inside of the top 20 in all of this year’s majors.
Simpson is a former winner here at Sedgefield, and while he has good course form, the American has never been the most prolific player when it comes to winning events so he’s a fairly vulnerable favourite.
Wyndham Championship betting tips
There might not be a better opportunity to back the Chilean young star Joaquin Niemann (33/1, 7 places), who will win on the PGA Tour very soon – it’s just a matter of when.
He’s 33/1 to win here which might seem too short of a price, but you have to take into account that this is a significantly weaker field than usual on the PGA Tour.
The 19-year-old already has four top 10 finishes this season, with perhaps the most impressive of those coming at the Memorial in a stacked field.
Sedgefield CC rewards players that have excellent approach play; Niemann ranks fifth in strokes gained: approach the green, and he also ranks fifth in par-4 scoring average – a vital statistic given that this is a par 70 layout.
