Who won what and where: Ko captures first Major

LPGA/LET: Evian Championship – Lydia Ko

Shooting the lowest final round in a Major the 18-year-old ‘finally’ claimed her first big one thanks to a closing 63 in France.

Ko became the youngest Major winner, beating Lexi Thompson, the previous youngest, by six shots. She started the final day two behind and was further behind after a hat-trick of birdies by the American from the 5th.  She was level by the 11th and four birdies coming home, and a Thompson double at the 14th, finished the contest. Ko then signed off with a birdie at the 18th, a hole she had bogeyed the first three days.

What she said: “Just to shoot 8-under on any day is a pretty solid round. I had the same under par as the last three days and today. It was kind of like a whole three days’ worth of work today. Shooting 8-under is great, but not to make any bogeys, I think that’s a bigger thing because it meant that when I was in trouble I kind of got myself out of it, and when I had the opportunities, I was able to grab it.”

European Tour: KLM Open – Thomas Pieters

Just two weeks after his first victory the Belgian won by a shot against last week’s winner Lee Slattery and Eduardo De la Riva.

Slattery had a four-foot putt at the 72nd hole to tie but missed and Pieters, winner in Russia a fortnight ago, was over the line. The 23-year-old closed with a 65 to follow up on his Saturday 62.

He went into Saturday two behind Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Slattery but then produced four birdies on the front nine. The Englishman had three birdies and his only dropped shot came at the last.

De la Riva had five birdies on the back nine in his 63.

Tom Watson posted a third straight 68 on Sunday to finish the week on seven under.

What he said: “I’m really, really happy. I felt like I played better in the Czech Republic, but my short game was great this week and saved me many times. 

“I had chances coming in and I felt like I needed to make a couple more. I feel bad for Lee as he played great. It wasn’t comfortable watching him play the last couple of holes. I was wishing I’d made one more birdie.”

Challenge Tour: Kazakhstan Open – Sebastien Gros

The Frenchman claimed the biggest title of the year to guarantee his place on the European Tour for 2016. Gros is now in top spot after parring the last while Denmark’s Mads Sogaard bogeyed.

Gros had led by three with eight to play but was pegged back by the Dane within three holes. Then the nerves set in, with both players dropping a couple of shots before Gros wrapped up his second win of the season.

Behind the leaders there was a four-way tie for third place between Sweden’s Jens Fahrbring, American Daniel Im, Scotland’s George Murray and Englishman Callum Shinkwin.

What he said: “I started the round so well. Through nine holes I was in a great rhythm but then we were told we were playing too slowly and when we sped up I started making a few mistakes.

“I was struggling a bit as the greens were getting slower with the rain but thankfully I’d done a great job before and that was enough. I’m sorry for Mads because he played really well and never gave up, and he only had a short one to get into a play-off, but I’m so happy to have won.”
