A brief history of the PGA Championship
Before we answer the question of when is the 2022 PGA Championship, allow us to give you a brief insight into the history of the tournament.
Originally a match play event, the first PGA Championship took place in 1916 at Siwanoy, New York. The first winner, Cornishman Jim Barnes, took home $500 and a donated diamond-studded gold medal. A little different from today’s collective earnings of $10.5 million and giant Wanamaker trophy.
In 1958 the tournament switched to a stroke play event after pressure from network broadcasters for a more recognisable 72-hole, four-day format.
Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen have won the most PGA Championships, with five apiece, while Tiger Woods has four.
