What he said: Quotes from PGA Championship round 1

We round up the best quotes following round one of the PGA Championship at Valhalla

TOURNAMENT LEADERBOARD

Rory McIlroy (Recovered to shoot 66 after going out of bounds on 10 and three putting 11)

“Things like that happen,” McIlroy said. “I was really annoyed with myself.”

“But the second shot on 12 really kick started things.

“I was still annoyed with the three putt after the double on 10 but it showed where I am at mentally with my game so I’m really happy with the 66.”

Lee Westwood (Superb 65 which included a double-bogey)

“I played well all day. I got off to a nice, steady start. Hit a lot of good shots. Hit a lot of fairways. Putted very nicely and just really carried on from the final round last week.  So yeah, it was a good round of golf.

“I think it probably clicked before then (Final round 63 at Firestone). I started to feel like my swing was coming around.

“I’ve got Mike (Walker, his coach) down at Old Palm the Monday before last week, and we did some work.

“That tends to be when I do my best work, on the range away from tournaments, and started to hit it well and got a few good feelings in my swing.

“That obviously gave me some confidence coming into this week.  Just tried to sort of almost take it easy in the practice rounds.  Played nine holes each day.  Didn’t want to drain myself, especially with the heat.
I’m still trying to qualify for the team to free up a pick for Paul “I tried just keep thinking about the final round last week and carry it into today.

“I’m there or thereabouts (Ryder Cup qualification). I wouldn’t be a million miles away with a good week this week.

“I’m still trying to qualify for the team to free up a pick for Paul. I don’t want to rely on a pick. I always think that there comes a bit more pressure if you’re a selection, as well, obviously, because you’ve got to try and sort of justify your pick almost.

“And I don’t want to be in that position.  I’d rather qualify for the team.”

Ian Poulter (A solid 69 for the Englishman)

“I’m pleased with the overall state of my game, because it hasn’t been there for a little while.  So I think the work that I put in Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday was rewarding to go out there to play well.

“It’s the most balls I’ve hit in any session. The body is allowing me to hit more balls at the minute, which is a good thing.  It’s coming into the right time of the year.

“I’m happy that I could work as hard as I wanted to work and take the rewards from that today by playing some very solid golf.

“There was a few tucked pin positions. As we have seen, I’m sure the scores have reflected. The par‑5s, you have to take advantage of.  The couple of short par‑4s, which most guys would take advantage of.

“You’ve got some key holes, key par‑4s, which are playing very long.  So play them smart and therefore you will be on the board in red figures.”

Rickie Fowler (Another good major showing so far for the American)

“You know, there’s so much that can happen from today onto Sunday.

“I mean, personally, ten shots out front going into Sunday would be nice.

“You just have to go hole by hole and go through your process and stick with the game plan and see where that puts me.

“It’s been a good year so far in the majors, definitely confident and feel good about my game.

“Get a few things worked out and see if we can good a one in tomorrow and get ourselves in a good position for the weekend.”

Tiger Woods (Disappointing 74 after surprise recovery from back spasms)

“It wasn’t very good. A lot of bad shots and I never got a putt to the hole. I hit them all my lines.  Just for some reason I thought they were going to be a little bit quicker, and I didn’t make the adjustment well enough.

“I had plenty of looks to turn my round around and then post something even par, even under par.

“It’s (the back) a little bit stiff, but that’s about it. I’m going to go get treatment and make sure this thing is nice and loose for tomorrow.”
