WGC-HSBC Champions fantasy picks
This week some of the best golfers in the world head to Sheshan International Golf Club in Shanghai for the WGC-HSBC Champions.
Many of Europe’s Ryder Cup heroes and the PGA Tour’s best players have made the trip to line-up in a star studded field in China.
Justin Rose is the defending champion of the tournament after he defeated Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Henrik Stenson by two strokes in 2017 to collect his second WGC title.
The aim of our fantasy game this year is to pick the right players to match the RankBuster. This week’s is set at 116 so who can you fit in your team to beat it? Here are my WGC-HSBC Champions fantasy picks.
Rory McIlroy
Fantasy Rank: 4
The Northern Irishman missed last year’s tournament but holds an impressive record at Sheshan International with a fourth placed finish and a T11 in his last two starts there.
It’s a layout that seems to suit his game but the only problem surrounding him this week would be whether he can shake the rust off with this being his first start since the Ryder Cup.
Rafa Cabrera Bello
Fantasy Rank: 13
Rafa Cabrera Bello is another player who likes playing at the WGC-HSBC Champions and finished T19 in 2016 and T5 in 2017.
The Spaniard has also made a cut start to the season and is a combined 23 under par for the first two tournaments of the 2019 season.
Xander Schauffele
Fantasy Rank: 20
Schauffele finished the 2018 season with two strong finishes at the BMW Championship (T3) and Tour Championship (T7) and started the 2019 with a 25th placed finished at the CIMB Classic.
He struggled last week at the CJ Cup with his first three rounds all in in the 70s but a final round of seven under par saw him break par for the week.
Eddie Pepperell
Fantasy Rank: 26
Pepperell comes off the back of a fantastic two shot victory at the British Masters despite struggling on the final day.
The Englishman has had a fantastic year so far and will be looking to show that he can get in the mix with the big names, just like he did at this year’s Open Championship at Carnoustie.
Emiliano Grillo
Fantasy Rank: 30
I feel like the Argentinian goes slightly under the radar on the PGA Tour as he has had some impressive finishes over the past year. The reason is probably the fact that Grillo is very streaky with his results but only had three missed cuts last season so when he’s playing poorly he still makes cuts.
He’s played this tournament twice in that last 3 years and has had a T35 in 2015 and finished 11th in 2016.
Pat Perez
Fantasy Rank: 42
Like our betting tipster Keel Timmins I like the look of Pat Perez as a long shot this week. The American comes into the HSBC Champions off the back of an impressive T7 finish at the CJ Cup and finished T24 here last year.
Last week’s picks: Sergio Garcia (Win), Pablo Larrazabal (MC), Ricardo Gouveia (T16), Julien Guerrier (T29), Clement Sordet (T58), Oliver Farr (T22)

The crushing truth behind the demise of European Tour events in the UK
Why the loss of the British Masters should concern us all
Matthew Beedle
Matthew has been playing golf since he was around 13 and took up the game at a local nine-hole municipal course with his friends before joining Pontefract & District Golf Club just over the hedge.
Still a member of Pontefract with a handicap of 3, he currently sits on the board of directors to help with digital and marketing initiatives in order to improve membership and visitor income.
Matthew graduated university with a First Class in Sports Journalism from Leeds Trinity University and has been working in the golf industry since graduating.
NCG’s social media & marketing manager, Matthew’s main job role is to increase website traffic to the National Club Golfer website via our email and social media channels as well as driving entries to grow our NCG Top 100s Tour events amongst other tasks.
Not one to change his equipment too often, Matthew currently plays the TaylorMade M2 driver which has lasted the test of time in his bag. Elsewhere, you’ll find him using the TaylorMade Stealth 2 three-wood with a Ping G425 Crossover 2-iron to aid his long game.
Through his 4-iron to Gap Wedge, Matthew uses the Ping i500 irons accompanied by Ping’s Glide 3.0 56-degree and 60-degree wedges.
Another club that has stood the test of time in his bag is a Nike Method Core MC-3i putter which has had to have the SuperStroke grip changed at least three times. Ball of choice is the Titleist ProV1.
