Waste Management Phoenix Open Fantasy Golf picks

The PGA Tour heads to TPC Scottsdale following Justin Rose’s two shot victory at Torrey Pines last week.

Last year, Gary Woodland defeated Chez Reavie in a playoff to record his third victory on the PGA Tour.

The aim of our fantasy game this year is to pick the right players to match the RankBuster. This week’s is set at 192 so who can you fit in your team to beat it? Here are my Waste Management Phoenix Open Fantasy Golf picks.

Jon Rahm

Fantasy Rank: 1

It’s not exactly sticking my neck on the line picking the favourite but it seems impossible to ignore Jon Rahm this week.

The Spaniard is on a tremendous run of form and has placed inside the top 20 on all three of his starts at TPC Scottsdale.

It’s also a tournament that Rahm has a great passion for having gone to college at Arizona State and he still currently lives in Phoenix.

Webb Simpson

Fantasy Rank: 7

Over the last year Simpson has truly turned his game around having struggled for a while since changing his putting method to adapt to the new anchoring rule.

He missed the cut here last year but since then has recorded eight top tens, including a win at The Players Championship, and has started the 2019 season in fantastic style – with his lowest finish being his T15 at the Shriners Hospital for Children Open.

Talor Gooch

Fantasy Rank: 30

Gooch has been in fine form of late, especially coming off the back of last week’s performance at Torrey Pines where he broke 70 in all four of his rounds to tie for third.

It’s also worth noting Gooch’s fantastic statistics heading into this event. He currently ranks second in strokes gained: approach to greens and he is also ranked second in bogey avoidance, which are two key stats for this week’s event.

Brendan Steele

Fantasy Rank: 43

Steele hasn’t been playing well as of late with a T57 and a missed cut in his last two starts on tour. However, he offers a lot when you look at his course form at TPC Scottsdale.

The American’s lowest finish in the last seven years has been a T26 in 2015 and, since 2012, he has placed inside the top six on four occasions.

Joel Dahmen

Fantasy Rank: 57

Dahmen has a high fantasy rank for this week’s event, mainly due this being his first start at TPC Scottsdale.

However, he heads to Arizona on the back of tremendous week at Torrey Pines, where he tied for ninth place.

Sung Kang

Fantasy Rank: 67

Kang missed the cut at last year’s event but previously finished strong in 2017 with a T12 finish.

The South Korean has also hit some form with two top 20 finishes in his last two starts. He also had a T20 at last week’s Farmers International Open after a fantastic third round of 66 saw him shoot up the leaderboard.

It’s also worth noting that all four of his rounds were under par last week.

Matthew Beedle

National Club Golfer and National Club Golfer magazine

Matthew has been playing golf since he was around 13 and took up the game at a local nine-hole municipal course with his friends before joining Pontefract & District Golf Club just over the hedge.

Still a member of Pontefract with a handicap of 3, he currently sits on the board of directors to help with digital and marketing initiatives in order to improve membership and visitor income.

Matthew graduated university with a First Class in Sports Journalism from Leeds Trinity University and has been working in the golf industry since graduating.

NCG’s social media & marketing manager, Matthew’s main job role is to increase website traffic to the National Club Golfer website via our email and social media channels as well as driving entries to grow our NCG Top 100s Tour events amongst other tasks.

Not one to change his equipment too often, Matthew currently plays the TaylorMade M2 driver which has lasted the test of time in his bag. Elsewhere, you’ll find him using the TaylorMade Stealth 2 three-wood with a Ping G425 Crossover 2-iron to aid his long game.

Through his 4-iron to Gap Wedge, Matthew uses the Ping i500 irons accompanied by Ping’s Glide 3.0 56-degree and 60-degree wedges.

Another club that has stood the test of time in his bag is a Nike Method Core MC-3i putter which has had to have the SuperStroke grip changed at least three times. Ball of choice is the Titleist ProV1.
