Wales Round-up: President Janet is a first

Our round-up of the latest club news from Wales

A North Wales golf club has become one of the first in Wales to elect a lady president, after more than a century of male dominance in the role.

Janet Davies has been appointed president of the 109-year-old Bangor St Deiniol after two successful years as lady captain, when the ladies team won promotion to Division 4 of the North Wales Ladies Counties League.

“It is a great honour to be elected the first lady club president and it is certainly a break with tradition,” said Davies. “I was concerned at first how the members at St Deiniol would take to the change, but everyone has been very supportive.”
‘It is rare in Wales to see a lady becoming club president’ One of the first actions in Davies’ new role was to organise a Family Fun Day at the club, with more than 50 potential junior and lady members attending.

Beginners’ lessons are being arranged with the support of Golf Development Wales and director of development Hannah Fitzpatrick said: “It is rare in Wales to see a lady becoming club president, but it helps to show that developing women’s and girls golf is key to increasing club membership in these challenging times.”

Davies said during her time as captain she witnessed a change in attitude at the club, with the ladies section becoming more integrated with the day to day running and decision-making process.

She added: “I aim to build on this and take the club forward as a modern, all inclusive club, where male, female and junior members are all treated equally.

“I hope that together we can build on the success of recent years, and with an enthusiastic group of greenkeepers and volunteers will see the course improve year on year.”

Boulden makes homecoming to give masterclass

Ladies European Tour golfer Amy Boulden made a return to her home club of Conwy, where she took part in a day of activities alongside almost 100 women and girls.

The 22-year-old LET Rookie of the Year took part in the New2Golf Month clinic and said: “Fifteen years ago that would have been me sitting out there in the audience, so it is really good to see how many are here today.

“When I was younger there were not so many girls getting into golf, so it is really good so see so many local girls here today.”

Andy Blake is Conwy professional and he said: “Amy is a world class player now, so just to see someone of that stature here is very important. When you go to the Open Championship and big events like that, you can not get near these world class players, so it is nice for everyone to be able to stand next to her.”

Swansea star swoops to win Golden Eagle prize

Swansea Bay’s Dean Morris shot 149 over 36 holes to lift the Tenby Golden Eagle.

The 47-year-old plus one handicapper defeated a clutch of three players who tied for second a shot behind.

Speaking to the South Wales Evening Post, Morris said: “I am delighted to have been able to come out on top in such a big tournament. It really is satisfying as the quality of the field was excellent.

“There were some really top players at this event. I was probably the oldest player in the field and as this was the first time I have entered, my expectations weren’t high going into it, so to win it feels great.”
