Valspar Championship betting tips

After the drama of The Players last week, the PGA Tour's Florida swing concludes at Copperhead. So who does our betting expert tip to shine by the sea?

The details

Venue: Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead), Palm Harbor, Florida

Date: March 21-24, 2019

Course stats: Par 71, 7,340 yards

Course summary: This undulating parkland requires a surgeon’s knife, with water coming into play on five holes and wind from the ocean often playing a part. There are five par 3s and it is a very tough finish with the last three holes known as the Snake Pit. Get on the greens in regulation and handle the short holes to win.

Purse: $6.7 million

Defending champion: Paul Casey (-10)

Weather forecast: Sunny and mild to start the tournament. It will warm up to the mid 20s as the weekend goes on but winds of up to 20mph may give the Sunday leaders something to think about.

TV coverage

Thursday: Featured groups, Sky Sports Golf and Main Event, 12.45pm; Sky Sports Golf, 7pm; Sky Sports Main Event, 10pm

Friday: Featured groups, Sky Sports Golf and Main Event, 12.45pm; Sky Sports Golf, 7pm

Valspar Championship betting tips: each-way selections

Jason Kokrak either finishes top 10 or misses the cut at Innisbrook so let’s hope this is his year to challenge. The American was eighth 12 months ago and seventh in 2015 but has been home for the weekend four times since 2011.

So why is he 50/1? Because take away The Players, where he comfortably made the cut but finished in a tie for 47th, and he has five top 20s in his last six events.

Tied 10th at Bay Hill he also went 68, 68 on the weekend to land a similar spot at the Honda Classic.

Fourth in strokes gained: approach the green and ninth tee to green, you would like to think he could prosper again on a course that rewards accurate hitters.

Ryan Moore’s top 20 at The Players, helped by a slam dunk ace in the first round, was his best finish in a while. At 66/1, he might be able to build on that at a Copperhead course where he recorded consecutive top fives in 2015 and 16.

That’s who Steve is putting his money down for the each-way places, but who is going to win on Sunday? Turn the page to find out…
