Landry clings on for maiden PGA Tour title

Andrew Landry made it back-to-back first-time winners on the PGA Tour with victory at the Texas Open. Keel Timmins wraps up all the action from TPC San Antonio

What happened at the Valero Texas Open?

Andrew Landry put on a classy final-round display to claim his maiden PGA Tour title at TPC San Antonio. The Texan, who lost in a playoff against Jon Rahm at the CareerBuilder Challenge earlier in the year, opened with three straight birdies and looked in control for the whole day.

He did have to hold off a stiff challenge from Trey Mullinax, though. After Landry missed short putts at both 12 and 14, it seemed that the pressure may have been getting to him.

But ultimately, the pressure affected Mullinax a lot more. On the drivable par-4 17th, Mullinax’s drive came up slightly short of the green-side bunker. Needing to put it close to get it to within one of the leader, he completely chunked his chip straight into the bunker.

With a par at the final hole, Landry secured his two-shot victory, holding off Mullinax as well as Sean O’Hair who closed with a round 66.

There was also big moves for both Jimmy Walker and Joaquin Niemann, who was making his first start as a professional.

Talking point

Making his first start as a professional, Joaquin Niemann played the weekend in 67-67 to finish ___.

The 19-year-old Chilean was ranked the best amateur in the world, and on this showing, it’s easy to see why.

To put this into context, Jon Rahm finished 3rd in his professional debut at the Quicken Loans National in 2016. Earlier that year, Bryson DeChambeau finished 4th at Harbour Town in his first pro outing.

Today was a grind. We’re trying to get to the Tour Championship this year, that was the goal.
