Valero Texas Open TV times and betting tips

NCG form expert Barry Plummer outlines everything you need to know for this week’s event at TPC San Antonio

With the Masters looming, the PGA Tour heads to Texas as players look to put the final touches to preparations for Augusta National. There’s also a spot up for grabs if the winner isn’t already exempt for the first men’s major of the year. Before I explain who I fancy to play well this week, here is all the information you need for the Valero Texas Open…

Valero Texas Open details

Venue: TPC San Antonio (AT&T Oaks Course), Texas

Date: April 1-4, 2021

Course stats: Par 72; 7,435 yards

Course summary: This tricky Greg Norman design is relatively long with familiar Bermuda grass greens. The famous oak trees, after which the course is named, must be avoided at all costs if you want to have a manageable approach. The fairways are not the hardest to find on the PGA Tour, but players will need to use an element of strategy to avoid the penal rough. Weather conditions are likely to affect proceedings this week, so it will be interesting to see which players can handle the heat in Texas.

Purse: $7.7 million

Defending champion: Corey Conners (-20)

Valero Texas Open betting tips

As usual, I’m joined by NCG’s Steve Carroll to discuss my betting tips for the Valero Texas Open on the Dialled In podcast. I’ve picked out three selections that I think have a great chance of winning this week.

You can listen to the podcast in the player below, or on your preferred podcast platform.

Valero Texas Open staking plan

Bazza’s Banker: Jordan Spieth (3pts e/w @ 14/1 with Bet365)

Spieth arrives here in fantastic form, reaching the round of 16 in the WGC-Match Play last week alongside three top 5s in his last six events. Augusta National is next on the schedule for Spieth, and with his impressive record there he will want to arrive firing on all cylinders to give himself a great chance to add another green jacket to his collection. On a course where accurate approach play is crucial, Spieth can certainly rise to the challenge as he ranks 4th for SG: Approach in the last three months. He will be hoping to go one better than his runner-up finish in 2015, so expect to see the famous Spieth fireworks throughout this event.

The outsider: Charley Hoffman (2.5pts e/w @ 30/1 with Bet365)

Hoffman is a previous champion here, pipping Patrick Reed by one shot in 2016, and after a fine run of recent form he has a great chance to repeat here at a reasonable price. As well as a previous win here, Hoffman also has two runner-up finishes and a third place at TPC San Antonio, with eight top-15 finishes in ten previous visits. That incredible record should be justification enough for his inclusion, but his recent form is also impressive. A T7 at Pebble Beach and a T10 at the Arnold Palmer highlight the strength in his recent performances, and when you consider that he ranks 5th for SG: Approach in the last three months he really shouldn’t need any more selling as a solid selection.

The long shot: Lanto Griffin (2pts e/w @ 55/1 with Bet365)

A 7th place finish at the Farmers Insurance Open earlier in the year has certainly boosted the form of Griffin, who has made five consecutive cuts and finished 35th or better in each event. In the last three months, Griffin ranks 12th for SG: Putting and 18th for SG: Approach, clearly demonstrating that this track should suit him. His only appearance in this event ended with a T58 finish, so with that experience under his belt I would expect him to improve this time around. At what looks to be a generous price, I wouldn’t bet against Griffin achieving his second PGA Tour win this week.
