Top 5: Jim Furyk's greatest shots
Jim Furyk added his name to golf’s record books on Sunday after shooting a 58 at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut to become the first player in PGA Tour history to achieve the feat.
The 46-year-old carded 10 birdies and an eagle for a score of 12-under-par on the final day. That still wasn’t good enough for the American to win the tournament, with Scotland’s Russell Knox claiming the crown three shots ahead of him.
However, many who have followed Furyk’s career closely wouldn’t have been too surprised by the 2003 US Open winner’s record-making round of 58.
The 17-time PGA Tour winner has consistently competed at the top of the men’s game for years.
To celebrate his significant achievement, here is a selection of some of his best shots.
5. 2014 Deutsche Bank Championship
Displaying his trademark unorthodox swing, Furyk showed the quality of his short game when playing at TPC Boston in the 2014 Deutsche Bank Championship.
Hitting his second shot on the par-4 15th, Furyk landed the ball on the green and it sped towards the hole, stopping momentarily on the cusp before dropping in for an eagle.
4. 2015 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
Most ordinary golfers probably would have given up, cursed under their breath and then dug out their sixth ball of the round after seeing their shot tumble off the cliff. But Jim Furyk is no ordinary golfer.
The talented veteran faced a tricky lie on the cliffs but showed his quality by hitting the ball cleanly and back onto the fairway.
Nerve well held.
3. 2014 Northern Trust Open
He’s at it again! Furyk’s again showed his ability to rescue a hole with an amazing chip shot at the 2014 Northern Trust Open at the Riviera Golf Club.
Walking away with a bogey on the par-4 2nd hole looked like the most likely scenario for Furyk as he approached his third shot with 151 yards to go to the green.
However, that isn’t how Jim rolls. He sunk the chip for an unlikely birdie. Bravo, sir!
2. 2016 Travelers Championship
Clutch putts don’t come much bigger than when you’re chasing a record-breaking 58.
Furyk showed nerves of steel to sweep the ball right into the centre of the cup on the par-3 16th at TPC at River Highlands in Connecticut.
A massive putt at a vital time. The rest is history.
1. 2013 Valero Texas Open
Mr 58 showed more class with a short iron in hand at the 2013 Valero Texas Open at TPC San Antonio.
Playing in the final round, Furyk pinged a 104-yard approach shot on the par-5 18th straight at the pin.
A small stream protects the green but that didn’t deter Furyk as his gusty shot took three small bounces before going in the hole for an eagle.
Great effort, Jim!
