What our panellists said:
MM: Outstanding – it’s got everything.
KE: For me, one of the most over- rated courses in the list.
DJ: Subtly perfect.
AL: The finest test of golf I have ever experienced.
CH: No weak holes – the only fault you can find is that you can’t see the sea.
CC: Sacrilege… but I think it’s a bit bland.
DC: The best all-round-conditioned links course in the United Kingdom.
Commentary: Curiously, at two of our top three links courses you only rarely catch a glimpse of the sea. Also like Carnoustie, Muirfield is far from spectacular. What cannot be denied is that this is a supreme strategic test, a course where you never play more than a couple of consecutive holes in the same direction. The pros love it because you get exactly what you deserve while the purists can only admire Harry Colt’s peerless design.
