Tiger Woods withdraws from US Open to continue recovery from surgery

Following his withdrawal from the Masters and the subsequent surgery to his ankle, Tiger Woods has decided not to enter the US Open

Tiger Woods has unsurprisingly withdrawn from the 2023 US Open after recently undergoing surgery on his injured ankle.

On Monday, the USGA announced 33 players who earned places at Los Angeles Country Club in June, but Woods had taken his name off the exemption list.

After battling through two rounds at the Masters, the 15-time major champion pulled out of the golf tournament as the rain began to come down at Augusta National.

Soon after, Woods announced he’d undergone a subtalar fusion procedure to address post-traumatic arthritis in New York.

This ruled him out of the PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club and golf fans may be lucky to see Woods tee it up again on the PGA Tour before the end of the year.

Prior to his surgery, Woods had been on a scouting mission at Los Angeles Country Club, the golf course set to make its US Open host debut.

The 47-year-old has won the tournament three times in his illustrious career – most recently, and arguably most memorably, in 2008 when beating Rocco Mediate in a playoff.

Woods has only played at the US Open once in four years and it was the only major he missed in 2022, having made an emotional farewell to the St Andrews crowd at the 150th Open Championship.

Despite previously lifting the Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool in 2006, it would be a huge surprise if Woods was to appear at Hoylake in July.

Woods has often told the media he isn’t capable of playing a regular schedule on the PGA Tour, with major championships at the forefront of his mind.

Twenty-five players confirmed their spots at the United States’ national championship on Monday by being placed in the top 60 of the Official World Golf Rankings.

This included Tyrrell Hatton, Jason Day, Tommy Fleetwood, Rickie Fowler, and Patrick Reed. Eight others earned spots through the current FedEx Cup standings, the 2022 DP World Tour points list, and the current Race to Dubai rankings.
