These rising golf stars could be destined for great things in 2022

Who could be destined for greatness in 2022?

These are exciting times in the world of golf. The top two players in the world, Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa are both in their 20s, and it is gratifying to see there’s plenty more young talent coming up through the ranks to challenge the old guard.

if you are planning on making a few golf online bets over the coming months, here are some of the names that need to be on your radar at this year’s major tournaments.

Sam Burns

Last May, 25 year old Burns won the Valspar Championship to lift the first of what seems sure to be a whole lot of PGA titles. This came only a few weeks after he finished just one shot off the playoff at the Genesis Invitational, an event in which he held the lead at the end of days one, two and three. In October, Burns won the Sanderson Farms Championship to take his second PGA trophy of the year.

Nobody outside the top three accumulated more ranking points than the unassuming and softly spoken young man from Louisiana. He has a fine, uncomplicated but instantly recognisable swing, and it’s one we’ll all be seeing more of this year.

Seamus Power

It’s not all about the millennial takeover, however. Some golf pros are late bloomers, we all know that, and Irishman Seamus Power is finally achieving the sort of results that his talent has been promising for so long.

He’s recently risen above Shane Lowry in the world rankings, and has confirmed that he will be playing in this year’s Irish Open. That news will be welcome to compatriot Rory McIlroy, who, incidentally, is two years Power’s junior but seems to be on an opposite trajectory so far this year. McIlroy will be glad to have some of the media spotlight focused on Power so that he can work on getting his own game back in order.

Patty Tavatanakit

The 22 year old from Bangkok proved she could mix it with the world’s top players in 2021. She had that incredible breakthrough win at the ANA Inspiration at Rancho Mirage, California in April. It earned her the Rookie of the Year award, and saw her finish the year just outside the top ten in the world rankings.

She is one of the most exciting young talents in the women’s game and will surely be challenging for more titles in 2022 and beyond.

Leona Maguire

Maguire was ranked top amateur women’s golfer for a record breaking 135 weeks between 2015 and 2018, and seemed destined for greatness. However, her first couple of seasons as a pro saw her make steady, as opposed to headline-grabbing, progress.

Finally, however, she started to show what she can really do in 2021, climbing from 177th to 40th in the rankings in the space of just 12 months. Expect to see here duking it out with the very best by the end of this year.
