The FedEx Cup playoffs are under way and Barry Plummer has picked out a trio of players who can get off to a flying start

It’s the first leg of the FedExCup Playoffs which brings us to Jersey City, New Jersey where The Northern Trust kicks off at Liberty National Golf Club. The top 125 in the standings will tee up at LNGC with the top 70 moving onto next week’s BMW Championship. Here’s who we expect to contend…

The Northern Trust details

The Northern Trust betting tips

Bazza’s Banker: Daniel Berger @ 30/1 with Bet365

Daniel Berger is already a popular pick this week – and it is easy to see why. Berger arrives at the first play-off event having secured three top-10 finishes in his last four starts, and has already won on the PGA Tour this season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

On what can be described as a ‘second shot’ golf course, Berger has the perfect game to be aggressive – ranking 11th for SG: Tee-to-green and 4th for SG: Approach in the last three months.

That statistic has improved further for Berger in the last 30 days, seeing him rank 1st in both measures for his last two events. At this price, in comparison to some of the other market leaders, he screams value.

Hideki Matsuyama @ 45/1 with Bet365

Hideki Matsuyama is already having the season of a lifetime, after famously securing his first green jacket at the Masters in April. Despite being such a huge moment in his career, his form has not really dipped since that great win.

A recent runner-up finish at the WGC FedEx St. Jude and a strong performance when representing Japan at the Tokyo Olympic Games highlights the strength of his golf at present, and the statistics support him putting in a bold show this week. Matsuyama currently ranks 5th for SG: Tee-to-green and 2nd for SG: Approach in the last three months.

Tyrrell Hatton @ 60/1 with Bet365

Although Tyrrell Hatton has been on a somewhat underwhelming run of form recently, he is surely too big at the price offered this week.

Hatton is, when on song, one of the best ball strikers around and although his results haven’t dazzled, his statistics tell a more positive story that may suit Liberty National.

The Englishman currently ranks 6th for SG: Tee-to-green in the last three months, and is actually playing well in most areas – albeit using a stone-cold putter. You cannot convince me that Hatton cannot win an event like this, so I am prepared to take a gamble at a huge price for the world number 13.
