TaylorMade Spider GT putter review: A mid-mallet with Spider forgiveness?

Blending bold designs with traditional styles, TaylorMade have revamped their Spider line-up for 2022. Hannah Holden has everything you need to know

Putters are probably one of my favourite pieces of equipment to test and they don’t come much better than a new TaylorMade Spider so let’s dive in on not one but FOUR new models available for 2022…

TaylorMade Spider GT putter review: First impressions

These new putters are packing a serious punch. How good does that red Spider GT putter look? I need it in a double-bend shaft now.

The Spider line is generally know for its loud bold and rather large putters but I really like the fact we also have the option of some smaller, more traditional styles here. Traditionalists and modernists eat your heart out.

TaylorMade Spider GT putter review: The technology

The construction of the Spider GT putter is all about stability. TaylorMade really wanted to provide golfers with extra forgiveness on off-centre strikes. To do this they had to move weight out of the middle of the putter and push it out onto the perimeters to drive up MOI.

The striking top plate of the Spider GT putters isn’t just for visuals, it’s a key part of this stability story. It is made from a lightweight 6061 aluminium which eliminates excess weight in the middle and top of the putter.

Below this we see a completely unique open frame multi-material design. This features two 90g steel weights in the sides which push an impressive 82% of the putters total weight to the perimeter.

There is no point having forgiveness if you can’t control speed. TaylorMade have used their Pure Roll 2 insert here which is slightly firmer.

It is made from black TPU urethan with silver aluminium beams at 45 degree angle. This is designed to improve topspin which will give you improved forward roll and ultimately more consistent ball speed.

Traditional design meets modern construction in the Spider GT Notchback. The CG is substantially different, moved as far forward towards the face as possible to make face rotation easier.

The main body is made from lightweight aluminium but then in the heel and toe you can see strategically placed dual-tungsten weights for stability and forgiveness. To improve the sound at impact, the head is extruded then machine milled.

TaylorMade are saying it has the highest ever MOI for a mid-size mallet spider.

On the sole we see a new tri-sole design, this will help you set the putter up square on the ground without changing the face angle.

The Spider GT Rollback features a classic half-moon shaping and aims to inspire confidence at address with the raised, curved centre section designed to match the width of a golf ball.

Coupled with the contrasting black sight, this makes it really easy to centre the golf ball at address.

The top design is crafted from anodised 6061 aluminium, which helps save weight. This combines with a 80gram tungsten stability bar that wraps around the back and side of the putter to increase MOI and forgiveness.

Again we see the new tri-sole design, this will help you set the putter up square on the ground without changing the face angle.

The winged design of the Spider GT Splitback allows some serious redistribution of mass to the perimeter of the putter and we all know what that means – more MOI, forgiveness, and stability.

This putter features a steel body with naturally adds more weight at the perimeter compared to aluminium.

Due to the density of steel some excess material has been removed from inside the wings to make weight savings. These chambers are then filled with foam to reduce vibrations and give you better sound and feel.

This model also incorporates one of the Spider X’s stand out features, the True Path alignment system. The contrasting white background and black sightline help golfers with alignment as well as stroke and path visualisation.
